AMTK 42
Description:
Amtrak P42DC 42, decked out in special markings to salute Americas military veterans, arrived in Los Angeles in the pre-dawn hours of September 2nd, and then spent time in the shop getting some mechanical work done. The unit operated on one "Pacific Surfliner" roundtrip on September 11th, and then disappeared again until September 19th, when it was put on display at Los Angeles Union Station. It is scheduled to be on the point of train #4, the eastbound "Southwest Chief," when it departs this same evening.

BNSF 4279
Description:
Following the closing on Sunday, May 1st, 2016, of Fullerton, Californias, annual Railroad Days celebration, the four mainline display pieces were coupled together to begin - eventually - the trip back to Los Angeles. Brand-new BNSF Railway ES44C4 4279 is coupled to Santa Fe 4-8-4 3751, Amtrak "Cabbage" (an F40PH diesel converted to an unpowered cab car/baggage car) 90208 and Amtrak P42DC 42. The two Amtrak pieces are both wearing the distinctive Veterans paint scheme. Nearly two hours after closing, the hundreds of spectators got what they wanted - the 3751 belching smoke and steam as this train headed east to rejoin the mainline. It would be almost another hour and a half before the real show, however, when this train would depart westbound for L.A. with the steamer providing the power. It may have been dark, but the sound was amazing!

Amtrak "Heritage" P42DC 66 leads the National Train Day display train at Los Angeles Union Station on May 12, 2012. In two days, Amtrak 66 will be coupled behind Santa Fe 4-8-4 3751 (sitting on track 11, just to the left) for the steam locomotives trip to northern Arizona. Description:
In car-centric Los Angeles, even National Train Day brings out automobiles! A 1950s vintage Cadillac, and a 1945 REA truck, were brought out to add to the retro atmosphere around Santa Fe 4-8-4 3751 on Track 11. Meanwhile, on Track 12, Amtrak "Heritage" P42DC 66 wears an old Amtrak scheme, although that is of a much more recent vintage than the others.

AMTK 192 - Fullerton CA - 01/21/23
Description:
Once again, Amtrak train 3, the westbound "Southwest Chief", is running late … on this morning, 3 hours and 33 minutes late out of the next-to-last stop before arriving in Los Angeles. The usual pair of Amtrak P42DCs, in this case 192 and 75, this time running back-to-back (they are usually both facing forward), have just six cars in tow (two sleepers, a diner, a lounge and two coaches). Today’s train 3 will arrive at Los Angeles Union Station just 3 hours and 4 minutes late, having made up 30 minuues in just 26 miles, thanks to a generously padded schedule. AMTK 91
Description:
Amtrak "Pacific Surfliner" #583 (San Diego to Los Angeles) arrived at Santa Ana, California, 45 minutes late on January 15th, 2013. But, since I wasn't a passenger, I didn't mind as it arrived as the sunset was fading, making for a shot that is better than if it had been on time! As the "Surfliners" regular F59PHIs are cycled through Amtrak's Beech Grove Shops for heavy maintenance, a few P42DCs are filling in, such as number 91 on train 583.

AMTK 99 - Miramar Hill, CA - 9/21/08
Description:
Were all the photographers there to photograph Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie for TMZ? No, they were after more elusive prey: Santa Fe 4-8-4 3751. Amtrak P42DC 99 is gingerly stepping around the southern leg of the wye at the summit of Miramar Hill in San Diego, with 3751 tagging along, backward, on the rear. After taking water on the east leg, the big steamer will be on the point for a short time, and then backed again to Old Town to pick up the train. Leaving San Diego, though, the might Northern will once again be in the lead, and doing most of the heavy lifting, too.

BNSF 9868
Description:
Amtrak train #3, the westbound "Southwest Chief," has arrived in Fullerton just a little behind "the advertised" -- Due to depart Fullerton, California, at 6:34 am, on December 28th, 2012, the train departed Fullerton at 7:23 PM! The train lost three hours due to engine problems between La Junta and Trinidad, Colorado, (resulting in BNSF loaning a freight engine, SD70MAC 9868, to assist Amtrak P42DC 113 and Dash 8-32BWH 500), then three and a half hours to run from Lamy, New Mexico, to Albuquerque. And as the old saying goes ("late trains just keep getting later"), this train lost more time due to a four-hour stop at Albuquerque! Thanks to the internet, word was out about the SD70MAC, a rare bird in California, and the station platform was swarming with railfans!

BNSF 9615 - Fullerton Junction, Fullerton, CA - 3/26/11
Description:
Running 9 hours 20 minutes late as it approaches it next to last stop in Fullerton, California, Amtrak train #3 (the westbound "Southwest Chief") has had a number of setbacks on its journey from Chicago to Los Angeles. Among the problems was the addition of BNSF SD70MAC 9615 in La Junta, Colorado, because of ailing Amtrak P42DC 45 developed problems, along with slow orders through Kansas and Colorado due to signal problems (reportedly copper theft), and then setting out unit 45 in Albuqueque, New Mexico. The train was running so late at this point that a crew change was scheduled for Fullerton, with the new crew taking the train the final twenty-six miles into Los Angeles.
