Title:  ATSF 3751
Description:  Good steam engine firemen pride themselves on a clean stack, and as Santa Fe 4-8-4 3751 speeds eastward across northern Arizona, the fireman is doing an exemplary job. 1992 was a banner year for this Northern, as it operated on its longest trip since being restored to service a year earlier - Los Angeles, California, to Chicago, Illinois, and return for a series of Santa Fe employee appreciation trips. The engine is seen here at Yucca, Arizona, on the last day of August 1992.

Title:  ATSF 3751
Description:  No water tank? No problem! On September 21, 2008, Santa Fe 4-8-4 3751 gets the water in the tender "topped off" while turning on the wye at CP Miramar, at the summit of Miramar Hill in San Diego. A fitting has been added to the bottom of the tender to facilitate the use of a nearby fire hydrant, rather than filling the tank from above as was done "back in the day".

ATSF 3751 - Miramar Hill, San Diego, CA - 9/21/08
Title:  ATSF 3751 - Miramar Hill, San Diego, CA - 9/21/08
Description:  Santa Fe 4-8-4 3751s crew carefully checks for possible derailments as the big engine is backed down the east leg of the wye at the summit of San Diegos Miramar Hill (CP Cumbres). This is industrial trackage, and the rail and roadbed made a lot of groaning in protest of the unexpected weight! The engine will take water before completing the turning manuver and a return to its train, 24 privately owned passenger cars making a day trip as part of the 2008 AAPRCO Convention in San Pedro.

Title:  ATSF 3751 - Los Angeles, CA - 5/8/10
Description:  The rear platform on observation car "Tioga Pass" is the place to be as Santa Fe 4-8-4 3751 heads straight through the maze of trackwork at the throat of Los Angeles Union Station. The short four-car train is heading for San Bernardino, where it will spend the night before returning to Los Angeles the next day. Metrolink MP36PH-3C 892 has been added behind the steamer for "protection" in case there are any problems en route.

ATSF 3751
Title:  ATSF 3751
Description:  In car-centric Los Angeles, even National Train Day brings out automobiles! A 1950s vintage Cadillac, and a 1945 REA truck, were brought out to add to the retro atmosphere around Santa Fe 4-8-4 3751 on Track 11. Meanwhile, on Track 12, Amtrak "Heritage" P42DC 66 wears an old Amtrak scheme, although that is of a much more recent vintage than the others.

Title:  ATSF 3751
Description:  85 Years Young! Santa Fe 4-8-4 3751 rolled out of the Baldwin Locomotive Works factory in Philadelphia PA in May 1927. The engine rolled its last revenue run for the Santa Fe in August 1953. Restoration was begun in 1986, with the first steam up occurring five years later, along with its first trip (Los Angeles to Bakersfield) in late 1991.

Title:  ATSF 3751
Description:  Its journey is just about done, as engineer Ed Dickens brings Santa Fe 3751 (owned by the San Bernardino Railroad Historical Society) to a stop on the old Santa Fe turntable at Amtrak's Redondo Junction engine facility near downtown Los Angeles. The 1927-built Baldwin locomotive took part in the festivities at San Bernardino Railroad Days over the weekend, and will shortly be placed back on its storage track to have its fires dropped and some tender loving care given to it before the next steam up on May 11th (for National Train Day at Los Angeles Union Station).

BNSF 4279
Title:  BNSF 4279
Description:  Following the closing on Sunday, May 1st, 2016, of Fullerton, Californias, annual Railroad Days celebration, the four mainline display pieces were coupled together to begin - eventually - the trip back to Los Angeles. Brand-new BNSF Railway ES44C4 4279 is coupled to Santa Fe 4-8-4 3751, Amtrak "Cabbage" (an F40PH diesel converted to an unpowered cab car/baggage car) 90208 and Amtrak P42DC 42. The two Amtrak pieces are both wearing the distinctive Veterans paint scheme. Nearly two hours after closing, the hundreds of spectators got what they wanted - the 3751 belching smoke and steam as this train headed east to rejoin the mainline. It would be almost another hour and a half before the real show, however, when this train would depart westbound for L.A. with the steamer providing the power. It may have been dark, but the sound was amazing!

Title:  ATSF 3751
Description:  Santa Fe 4-8-4 3751 passes the (now closed) Terminal Tower at the north end of Los Angeles Union Passenger Terminal on July 17, 2016. This is familiar territory for the 1927-built Baldwin Northern, which used to operate out of Los Angeles. The engine has come from its home at the Amtrak (former Santa Fe) shops at Redondo Junction, about five miles south of Union Station, in order to help Metrolink showcase its new EMD F125 diesel.
