Description:
Due to trackwork on September 8th, 2012 (new switches being installed at CP Stadium in Anaheim), Amtrak's "Pacific Surfliners" detoured on the Olive Subdivision between Orange and Atwood (Placentia), at which point they reversed direction and headed to Fullerton. Not exactly rare mileage (thanks to Metrolink), catching "Surfliners" on these lines is somewhat rare. Train 566 is seen crossing the Santa Ana River on the Olive Sub (and also crossing from Anaheim to Orange) on its way to Oceanside, with Dash 8-32BWH 505 and F59PHI 450 powering the train. (There was also trackwork going on south of Oceanside, so these trains were only operating between L.A. and Oceanside, rather than going all the way to San Diego.)

Description:
BNSF Railway 7626, having come from Los Angeles (with 7823 and 4902, as train B-LACLAC3-04) to drop off some baretable intermodal cars, is done with its work and is waiting for a pair of Amtrak trains to pass before continuing its journey. The first train to pass is Amtrak #572, a "Pacific Surfliner" led by F59PHI 451. A quarter-mile ahead is westbound Amtrak #769 and, once it passes, the B-LACLAC3-04 will switch back onto the main and depart westbound for a return trip to L.A. as a deadhead move.

Description:
Working as the relief engine/switcher in San Diego on August 17th, 2013, is a pristine F59PHI 452. Built in June 1988 (an EMD product that was assembled at Super Steel in Schenectady, NY), these locomotives are currently cycling out to Amtrak's Beech Grove shop in Indiana for rebuilding and new paint. Amtrak 452 arrived back in Los Angeles from Beech Grove on August 5th - just twelve days earlier. (It was on #3, the westbound "Southwest Chief," behind P42DCs 203 and 6, and at the end of the train was recently rebuilt "Pacific Surfliner" coach 6307 as the train's last car.)

Amtrak Pacific Surfliner #583 had an unusual consist on the head-end on Feburary 24th, 2015: F59PHI 453 is leading NPCU 90230 (F40PH 230 converted to an unpowered cab car/baggage car). Amtrak F59PHI 452 is powering the train on the rear as well. The train is seen crossing the Santa Ana River, the border between Anaheim and Orange, and in the distance are Santiago Peak (5,689 feet) and Modjeska Peak (5,496 feet), collectively known as Saddleback.

Two Amtrak anniversary engines in one place! Amtrak P42 145, the first of several engines painted in "retro" schemes to celebrate the passenger carriers 40th anniversary in 2011, has just arrived in Los Angeles on its first trip to the west (on train #1, the "Sunset Limited"). On the adjacent "escape" track sits Amtrak F59PHI 457, wearing a special scheme to commemorate the "Pacific Surfliner" services 10th anniversary in 2010. Note only is this an unusual view of the 457s rear, but also note the damage to the pilot on 145, the result of a grade crossing accident in San Antonio the previous day.

Amtrak "Pacific Surfliner" #784 is due to depart Fullerton, California, at 5:40 pm. But, due to delays north of Los Angeles, the train is running a little late - arriving in Fullerton at 6:25. Thanks to a tip from friend Charles Freericks (who saw the train in L.A.), I was able to grab this shot of the train, led by F59PHI 457 in a new Operation Lifesaver wrap. Knowing the 457 was on the point caused me to search out an angle to shoot, whereas I might otherwise have concentrated on a westbound due at about this time because it had the "better" light. In retrospect, I like this light much better! (Thanks, Charles!)

On December 29th, 2013, Amtrak "Pacific Surfliner" #777 (San Diego CA to San Luis Obispo CA) passes the construction site for the new Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center (ARTIC). Located near the present Anaheim station, ARTIC is situated between Angel Stadium (MLB's Angels) and the Honda Center (NHL's Ducks) – and not far from Disneyland – and will serve Amtrak, Metrolink, transit buses, tour buses and, they hope, the planned high speed rail line connecting southern California to northern California. Description:
Amtraks fleet of F59PHIs in service on the "Pacific Surfliners" has been looking rather shabby for the last year or so. But in 2012 Amtrak has started sending a few of these back to Beech Grove in Indiana for overhauls, and that includes new paint. Unit 460 returned in late 2012, and is seen in fresh paint on "Pacific Surfliner" #573 as it passes through Fullerton, California, on January 12th, 2013.

Description:
Running about a half-hour late, San Luis Obispo-bound Amtrak "Pacific Surfliner" #775 departs the station in Fullerton, California, on a rainy December 21, 2010. (This was the fifth of six consecutive days of nearly non-stop rain in southern California.) On the middle-main sits BNSF Railway train S-LHACLO1-21A, waiting for a clear signal after being held so that the passenger train could cross in front of him. The crew on the freight used this break to dodge the raindrops and scurry to the cafe in the station (in the lower right) for some warm coffee while they wait for their clear signal indication.

It is a cloudless day, yet this shot appears to be a "storm light" shot due to the heavy smoke from a massive fire in the Corona/Yorba Linda/Brea area a few miles to the northeast. (The smoke was much darker than this image suggests.) Amtrak "Pacific Surfliner" #577 passes through the Orange, California, Metrolink station on a very windy and smokey Saturday, November 15, 2008.

AMTK 464 - CP Maple, Orange, CA - 7/3/11
Description:
On July 3, 2011, a BNSF Railway train, heading from Barstow to San Diego, patiently waits on the Olive Subdivision at CP Maple. The freight has already watched Metrolink train 665 (San Juan Capistrano to Los Angeles) pass by, and now waits for Amtrak "Pacific Surfliner" 784 (Goleta to San Diego) to clear the junction. The 16-car BNSF train, led by ES44DCs 7731, 7715 and 7705, will follow the Amtrak train and meet Metrolink 860 (Oceanside to San Bernardino), waiting at the Orange station, once it gets on the Orange Subdivision.
