Painted for the 2002 Winter Olympic Games Torch Relay Train, UP SD70Ms 2001 and 2002 were released back into the freight pool following their special assignment. On August 20th, 2003, UP 2001 (the former UP 4690) leads the power from train ILDLB-17 south of Dolores Yard in Carson, California.

UP 2002
Description:
One of Union Pacifics two SD70Ms painted to serve on the Olympic Torch Relay train for the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah, was found sitting all by itself at the northern end of UPs Dolores Yard in Carson, California, on April 6th, 2012. Purchased from EMD as UP 4691 (b/n 996168-156), this August 2001-built engine and sister 4690 were renumbered 2001 and 2002, and painted by Wisconsin & Southerns shop in Horicon, Wisconsin, is this attractive scheme for service ferrying the Olympic Torch around the country. Rumors have circulated lately these these two engines are slated to get renumbered and repainted to standard UP colors, so finding this ten years after the Olympics was nice.

This westbound Union Pacific intermodal train had two interesting locomotives on the head-end - UP ES44AC 7964, decorated as GE's 5000th Evolution Series Locomotive, and SD70M 2002, still wearing its markings for the 2002 Winter Olympic Games. UP ES44AC 5425 is this train's rear-end Distributed Power Unit (DPU).

UP 3790 - Dolores Yard, Carson, CA - 3/29/11
Description:
At the north end of Union Pacific's Dolores Yard is CP Alameda, where some of the power lays over awaiting assignment. Unlike southern California's other railroad, BNSF Railway (which operates a steady stream of GE power in the area), EMD power is no stranger to the Union Pacific in the L.A. Basin. Here we see SD70M 3790 and SD90MAC 8200 resting between runs on March 29, 2011. (The UP calls these SD90MACs "SD9043AC" rather than sticking with the EMD designation.)

Description:
Union Pacific intermodal train ISALB 20 crosses the Los Angeles River on its way to Long Beach, California. This train ran down the UPs line along the east bank of the river before crossing, while the former Santa Fe, now Amtrak line follows the western bank of the river (note the old cantilver signal just ahead of the 7769). Along with the river, two other iconic LA landmarks are visible in this shot: The Sears building on the right, and city hall in the distance on the left.

Union Pacific 5839 leads a hot manifest train, the MWCNP 31 (West Colton CA to North Platte NE), over the Summit of Cajon Pass on a snowy New Years Eve 2014. Assisting the AC4400CW are Ferromex ES44AC 4667 and UP SD60M 2490 and SD70M 4278 (with AC4400CW 6473 as the rear DPU). This train is hot enough that management tracks its progress very closely to ensure no delays.

At sunset on May 15th, 2013, Union Pacific's ZLAAH 13 (UPS; Expedited Intermodal; Los Angeles CA to Chicago IL [Ashland Ave]), heads east out of Duncan, Nebraska. UP SD70M 5043 is, actually, the last unit on this train - the consist was 8781-7794-8575 up front, with 8564-5043 on the rear.
