BNSF 9868
Title:  BNSF 9868
Description:  Amtrak train #3, the westbound "Southwest Chief," has arrived in Fullerton just a little behind "the advertised" -- Due to depart Fullerton, California, at 6:34 am, on December 28th, 2012, the train departed Fullerton at 7:23 PM! The train lost three hours due to engine problems between La Junta and Trinidad, Colorado, (resulting in BNSF loaning a freight engine, SD70MAC 9868, to assist Amtrak P42DC 113 and Dash 8-32BWH 500), then three and a half hours to run from Lamy, New Mexico, to Albuquerque. And as the old saying goes ("late trains just keep getting later"), this train lost more time due to a four-hour stop at Albuquerque! Thanks to the internet, word was out about the SD70MAC, a rare bird in California, and the station platform was swarming with railfans!

Title:  AMTK 503
Description:  Amtrak "Pacific Surfliner" #785 (San Diego to Goleta, CA) passes through the lagoons at the northern end of San Diego as it approaches the Pacific Ocean and its next stop at Solana Beach. This train often features older Amfleet and Horizon Fleet cars, and that necessitates the use of a Non Powered Cab Unit (also commonly called a "Cabbage" due the fact that they have a cab and a baggage compartment), in this car Amtrak 90230, which was rebuilt from Amtrak F40PH 230 and is painted for "Cascades" service in the Pacific Northwest. Oddly, even though there is an F59PHI shoving on the rear, todays train also has a GE Dash 8-32BWH on the point: Amtrak 503.

Title:  AMTK 503
Description:  During the Del Mar Race Season, Amtraks "Pacific Surfliner" trains become a bit more interesting as one train set is made up of older equipment (in order break up one standard high-level train set in order to extend the other train sets). On July 29th, 2011, train 582 departs Fullerton, California, on its way from Los Angeles to San Diego, with F59PHI 464 on the headend, a consist of Horizon and Amfleet cars, an old "Heritage" baggage car and Dash 8-32BWH 503 on the rear. Its a nice break from the usual "Pacific Surfliner" cars for those watching trackside, but I suspect that the passengers would rather have the newer - and nicer - "Surfliner" cars in which to ride.

Description:  Amtrak P32BWH 503 is getting rewired at the carriers Los Angeles engine facility at Redondo Junction, just south of downtown Los Angeles. These electricians have my respect, as rewiring a locomotive is one job I cannot imagine is very easy to do.

Description:  The parking lot at the Fullerton, California, Amtrak / Metrolink station needs additional parking, and a new parking structure is rising west of the depot (and west of Harbor Boulevard). Amtrak "Pacific Surfliner" #567 (San Diego to Los Angeles) is seen passing this new structure, with Dash 8-32BWH 503 for power rather than one of the normal F59PHI diesels, on March 3, 2012.

Title:  AMTK 505
Description:  Due to trackwork on September 8th, 2012 (new switches being installed at CP Stadium in Anaheim), Amtrak's "Pacific Surfliners" detoured on the Olive Subdivision between Orange and Atwood (Placentia), at which point they reversed direction and headed to Fullerton. Not exactly rare mileage (thanks to Metrolink), catching "Surfliners" on these lines is somewhat rare. Train 566 is seen crossing the Santa Ana River on the Olive Sub (and also crossing from Anaheim to Orange) on its way to Oceanside, with Dash 8-32BWH 505 and F59PHI 450 powering the train. (There was also trackwork going on south of Oceanside, so these trains were only operating between L.A. and Oceanside, rather than going all the way to San Diego.)

Title:  AMTK 506
Description:  Amtrak train #36, the eastbound "Desert Wind" (Los Angeles CA to Salt Lake City UT) passes through Lambert, a "station" in eastern Anaheim, California, on January 27th, 1993. Amtrak's colorful 500-class General Electric Dash 8-32BWH diesels were the normal power on trains #35 and #36 at this time, and one could easily handle this five-car consist. In Salt Lake City, the "Desert Wind" would connect with both trains #5 and #6 (the Chicago IL to Emeryville CA “San Francisco Zephyr,” later renamed “California Zephyr”) and trains #25 and #26 (the Portland OR to Salt Lake City “Pioneer”). These trains were in service from October 28, 1979 until May 10, 1997, at which point both the “Desert Wind” and the “Pioneer” were discontinued.

Description:  On the last day of 1992, Amtrak "Pacific Surfliner" #572 arrives in Los Angeles, California. The train, seen passing Los Angeles Union Station's Terminal Tower, is powered by one of only 20 GE Dash 8-32BWH diesels ever built. (In the background, on the hill, Dodger Stadium can be glimpsed.)

AMTK 507 - Chatsworth, CA - 1/22/11
Title:  AMTK 507 - Chatsworth, CA - 1/22/11
Description:  One Amtrak "Pacific Surfliner" trainset per day runs from Los Angeles to San Luis Obispo, avoiding the more common segment from San Diego to L.A. This is also the only trainset not made up of EMD F59PHI diesels and Alstom hi-level passenger cars. On January 22, 2011, Amtrak train #799 threads its way through the Chatsworth Rocks on its way north, with a pair of GE Dash 8-32BWH diesels (507 on the point, and 510 on the rear) and a mix of older Amfleet and Horizon Fleet cars, along with a privately owned car (painted for the Southern Pacific) just behind the lead engine. The train is just about to duck into the first of the two tunnels here, as it departs Los Angeles San Fernando Valley and enters Simi Valley.

Description:  Amtrak "Pacific Surfliner" #565 heads to Los Angeles on its run from San Diego, California. On the point is Amtrak 90208, the former F40PH 208 converted to a Non-Powered Control Unit (NPCU), with Dash 8-32BWH 507 shoving on the rear. this trainset is made up of older Amfleet and Horizon Fleet cars, rather than the high-level coaches built for these trains by Alstom. Title:  AMTK 507
Description:  Back when they were new in the early 1990s, Amtraks Dash 8-32BWH diesels hauling Horizon Fleet and Amfleet cars on the "San Diegans" was the norm. But since the delivery of dedicated "Pacific Surfliner" equipment (F59PHIs and high-level coaches, along with a name change for these trains) in 1998, this older equipment was used sparingly. But with recent schedule changes, some of these older trainsets have been pressed back into daily service, providing some variety on the California coast. On March 3, 2012, "Pacific Surfliner" #572 departs Fullerton behind Dash 8-32BWH 507 (wearing its third paint scheme) for its trip to San Diego.

Title:  AMTK 509
Description:  Amtraks "Pacific Surfliners" are normally assigned 450-class F59PHI diesels, painted in "Pacific Surfliner" colors to match the cars. But on January 21, 2012, Dash 8-32BWH 509 was shoving on the rear of train #573 as it accelerated out of its stop at Fullerton, California. When first delivered in 1991 the twenty 500-class GE locomotives were regularly assigned to these trains (then called "San Diegans". In Amtraks early days, low-numbered 500-class SDP40Fs were also assigned to the "San Diegans," too.
