One Amtrak "Pacific Surfliner" trainset per day runs from Los Angeles to San Luis Obispo, avoiding the more common segment from San Diego to L.A. This is also the only trainset not made up of EMD F59PHI diesels and Alstom hi-level passenger cars. On January 22, 2011, Amtrak train #799 threads its way through the Chatsworth Rocks on its way north, with a pair of GE Dash 8-32BWH diesels (507 on the point, and 510 on the rear) and a mix of older Amfleet and Horizon Fleet cars, along with a privately owned car (painted for the Southern Pacific) just behind the lead engine. The train is just about to duck into the first of the two tunnels here, as it departs Los Angeles San Fernando Valley and enters Simi Valley. |

Back when they were new in the early 1990s, Amtraks Dash 8-32BWH diesels hauling Horizon Fleet and Amfleet cars on the "San Diegans" was the norm. But since the delivery of dedicated "Pacific Surfliner" equipment (F59PHIs and high-level coaches, along with a name change for these trains) in 1998, this older equipment was used sparingly. But with recent schedule changes, some of these older trainsets have been pressed back into daily service, providing some variety on the California coast. On March 3, 2012, "Pacific Surfliner" #572 departs Fullerton behind Dash 8-32BWH 507 (wearing its third paint scheme) for its trip to San Diego. |
