BNSF 3970 - San Bernardino CA - 12/23/2020
Title:  BNSF 3970 - San Bernardino CA - 12/23/2020
Description:  On a day in which the cold Santa Ana Winds were blowing extra hard, making it difficult to even stand without some effort, a quartet of diesels is putting together a train of empty grain hoppers at the Ardent Mills elevator at Verdemont. BNSF ET44C4 3970, Norfolk Southern ES44AC 8114 (the Heritage unit painted in the colors of the original NS, a North Carolina regional railroad), NS AC4400C6M 4200 (rebuilt from NS Dash 9-44CW 8947) and BNSF ES44C4 3268 will depart later as BNSF train X-SBDBAR3-22A (Empty Unit Grain; San Bernardino to Barstow). Unlike other railroads, BNSF trains with a symbol beginning with an "X" are not Extras, but Empty Grain Trains. (San Bernardino, California – December 23, 2020)

NS 4289 - San Bernardino CA - 12/23/20
Title:  NS 4289 - San Bernardino CA - 12/23/20
Description:  As BNSF Guaranteed Service Intermodal train Q-NWHLAC0-19L (North Baltimore OH to Los Angeles CA) descended Cajon Pass behind Norfolk Southern AC44C6M 4289 (rebuilt from NS Dash 9-40CW 9033 in May 2020), it met BNSF Empty Unit Grain Train X-SBDBAR3-22A (San Bernardino CA to Barstow CA) at the Ardent Mills elevator in Verdemont. The grain empties had BNSF ET44C4 3970 teamed with NS ES44AC 8114 (the Norfolk Southern Heritage engine), NS AC44C6M 4200 (the former NS Dash 9-44CW 8947) and BNSF ES44C4 3268. It must have been “Norfolk Southern Day” on Cajon Pass this day! (San Bernardino, California – December 23, 2020)

BNSF 3679 - Fullerton CA - 12/20/20
Title:  BNSF 3679 - Fullerton CA - 12/20/20
Description:  BNSF train Z-LPKLAC7-18, with still-shiny ET44C4 3679 up front (built in 2020), overtakes lower-priority train S-LPKSCO1-17, which is stopped at Basta. Both trains originated in Logistics Park Kansas City, with the train that departed on December 17 waiting for an opening at the Port of Long Beach, while the train that departed KC the next day flying past on its way to Los Angeles Hobart Yard. BNSF 4279
Title:  BNSF 4279
Description:  Following the closing on Sunday, May 1st, 2016, of Fullerton, Californias, annual Railroad Days celebration, the four mainline display pieces were coupled together to begin - eventually - the trip back to Los Angeles. Brand-new BNSF Railway ES44C4 4279 is coupled to Santa Fe 4-8-4 3751, Amtrak "Cabbage" (an F40PH diesel converted to an unpowered cab car/baggage car) 90208 and Amtrak P42DC 42. The two Amtrak pieces are both wearing the distinctive Veterans paint scheme. Nearly two hours after closing, the hundreds of spectators got what they wanted - the 3751 belching smoke and steam as this train headed east to rejoin the mainline. It would be almost another hour and a half before the real show, however, when this train would depart westbound for L.A. with the steamer providing the power. It may have been dark, but the sound was amazing!

BNSF 6570 • Orange CA • 08/05/20
Title:  BNSF 6570 • Orange CA • 08/05/20
Description:  Fresh from the Siemens AG factory in Florin, a part of Sacramento, California, are the first two SC-44 "Chargers" for San Diego County’s Coaster commuter trains. The engines were picked up at the factory by Union Pacific SD70ACe 8989 the day before, as UP train SFLWC-04 (Special, Florin to West Colton), and brought south to UP’s West Colton Yard, where it arrived this morning. This short train was then handed off to the BNSF Railway, and ES44C4 6570 was added, for the trip south to Stuart Mesa, a joint Metrolink/Coaster facility just north of Oceanside. Coaster is now operated by North County Transit District (NCTD), which recently modified its paint scheme to eliminate the white horizontal stripe and include more blue than on the older teal. white and blue scheme. BNSF train J-WCLSTZ1-05 (High/Wide Move, West Colton to Stuart Mesa) is about to get off Metrolink’s Olive Sub at CP Maple and travel on Metrolink’s Orange Sub all the way to Stuart Mesa. The two Coaster engines were being shipped under the SIIX reporting mark. (Orange, California – August 5, 2020)

BNSF 7381 - Silverwood, Cajon Pass, CA - 11/13/10
Title:  BNSF 7381 - Silverwood, Cajon Pass, CA - 11/13/10
Description:  BNSF Railway symbols loaded ethanol trains as grain trains, which makes sense, I suppose, since ethanol is derived from corn. Train G-RAVWAT7-06A (Ravenna NE to Watson CA) snakes through Silverwood, just around the corner from Cajon Pass Summit, on November 13, 2010. In the distance, behind the tank cars, the white trailers being conveyed on BNSF train Z-LACWSP9-13L (Los Angeles CA to Willow Springs IL).

BNSF 6606
Title:  BNSF 6606
Description:  Twelve miles east of Bakersfield, California, is Sandcut. While the mainline has been steadily climbing for most of those 12 miles, Sandcut has the first curve and is generally considered the beginning of the climb over the Tehachapi Mountains. Constructed by Southern Pacific, the line is now owned by Union Pacific. However, most trains crossing the Tehachapis are BNSF Railway trains (formerly Santa Fe), as typified by train Z-FRSCHI1-12A (Priority UPS - LTL Intermodal; Fresno CA to Chicago IL) with ES44C4 6606 on the head end. Ahead lies the famed Tehachapi Loop, in which the tracks loop over themselves in order to gain elevation.

BNSF 6607
Title:  BNSF 6607
Description:  While waiting for the mile-long Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus train, a passenger train that could not be much shorter appeared heading the other direction! BNSF ES44C4 6607 was on the point of train U-NEEBAK5-12Z (Needles to Bakersfield) consisting of just two cars: BNSF 81 (a track measurement car, the former ATSF 63 built by ACF in 1950) and BNSF 80 "Rio Grande River" (a "theatre" car rebuilt from BNSF 43, which was originally built as Southern Pacific bi-level gallery commuter coach 3700 by P-S in 1955). Shortly after passing, this two-car westbound met the 59-car eastbound circus train somewhere between Mojave and Tehachapi – that must’ve been quite a contrast.

BNSF 5200 - Mormon Rocks, Cajon Pass, CA - 11/13/10
Title:  BNSF 5200 - Mormon Rocks, Cajon Pass, CA - 11/13/10
Description:  Cajon Pass famed "Mormon Rocks" are a series of cemented sandstone beds much more resistant to erosion than the surrounding gravel and silt sands, giving them a pockmarked appearance. Officially called the Rock Candy Mountains, the strange rock formations are one of the youngest and most active geological regions in North America. Formed by the overlapping of the Baja Plate and the North American Plate, the Mormon Rocks (so nicknamed because this was the preferred route of Amasa Lymand and Charles Rich, who led a band of Mormon settlers from Salt Lake City across the Mojave Desert in 1851) are a visible indicator of the San Andreas Fault (where the two aforementioned tectonic plates collide). BNSF Railway ethanol train G-RAVWAT7-06A (Ravenna NE to Watson CA), led by Dash 9-44CW 5200, threads its way through "the Rocks" on November 13, 2010.

Title:  BNSF 5200 - Swarthout Road, Cajon Pass, CA - 11/13/10
Description:  On November 13, 2010, BNSF Railway G-RAVWAT7-06A (loaded ethanol, Ravenna NE to Watson CA) rounds the curve approaching Swarthout Road, just east of Blue Cut in Cajon Pass. Power for this train is Dash 9-44CW 5200, ES44DC 7206, ES44C4 6608 and ES44DC 7686 (with ES44C4 6605 and ES44DC 7381 for the rear DPU). Note the faux rock retaining wall in the background, installed when this line was triple-tracked a couple years previously.

BNSF 6642 - Kansas City, KS - 9/19/10
Title:  BNSF 6642 - Kansas City, KS - 9/19/10
Description:  A pair of interesting diesels are on BNSF Railways H-GALKCK2-19A (Galesburg IL to Kansas City KS) - Brand-new ES44C4 6642 is on the point, and also new 3GS21C 1305 heading west to, eventually, California. General Electrics ES44C4s are, at this date, unique to the BNSF and feature four, rather than six, traction motors. The center axle of each truck is unpowered, so these locomotives have an A1A-A1A wheel arrangement (just like an E-unit). But, unlike E-units, these feature a variable traction control system in their computer systems and, with the center axle capable of being raised off the rail slightly to maintain sufficient adhesion by varying the weight on the drive axles. Switch engine 1305, built by National Railway Equipment (of Mount Vernon, IL), is a low-emissions diesel road switcher locomotive that has low-emissions to keep air clean in southern California. It is powered by three Cummins QSK19C I6 engines with each one developing 700 horsepower and creating a total power output of 2,100 horsepower.

BNSF 6646 - mp 58, Cajon Pass, CA - 11/6/10
Title:  BNSF 6646 - mp 58, Cajon Pass, CA - 11/6/10
Description:  General Electrics ES44C4 diesels, with their unique A-1-A trucks, are (so far) unique the the BNSF Railway. A pair of them, 6646 from the second order, and 6602 from the first, are on the head end of unit coil steel train U-PITKAI1-05A (Pittsburg, California to Kaiser [Fontana], California) as it descends Cajon Pass in southern California on November 6, 2010. The second order of the ES44C4s have noticeably heavier handrail stanchions (they almost appear solid in this image) than the earlier order, a trait shared with later ES44DCs as well. (The consist for this train is 6646, 6602 and 7440 up front, with 4081 and 5010 as the DPUs on the rear.)

Description:  At Frost, just south of Victorville, California, the old Santa Fe mainline has a "natural" crossover in order to have trains orient trains for the left-hand running typical on Cajon Pass, a few miles ahead. BNSF Railway train S-LPCLBA1-06A (Intermodal Stacks; Logistics Park Chicago IL to Pier A Long Beach CA), behind ES44C4 6662 and ES44DC 7272, is seen here heading west and crossing over the other mainline, which is used primarily for eastbounds.

Title:  BNSF 6686
Description:  Lunch is just about over, and the second load of children will shortly be loaded on BNSF Railways annual Southern California Christmas Train - and the sun popped out! So a few of us hopped off and headed to the west end to photograph ES44C4 6686, festooned with holiday finery for these trips. Sister ES44C4 6715 is coupled to the other end of this seven-car train, so that reversing at Cajon Pass Summit is a simple matter. Photos taken, it was time to head back to the train, just before the first passengers arrived.

BNSF 6686
Title:  BNSF 6686
Description:  Just after sunup, a rainbow appeared - a positive omen for the days trip to Duarte to pick up a load of children from the City of Hope Hospital. BNSF Railway ES44C4 6686 will be the trailing unit on the westbound runs, and ES44C4 6715 will lead, with the engines trading duties for the eastbound runs. This BNSF Christmas Train would be the final train to operate to Duarte. In fact, a bumper needed to be removed in order to this train to get that far west, along with flagging a grade crossing that had already had its gate removed. Having ridden this line several times on Santa Fes "Chief," and later on Amtraks "Southwest Limited," and I was happy to be on the very last passenger movement on that particular line on December 18th, 2011 – even if I was dressed as a chipmunk most of the trip. (Note that the line remains in service for local freights to Irwindale, and it is only the short stretch from Irwindale to Duarte that will be removed for the MTA Gold Line extension in the coming years.)

BNSF 6715
Title:  BNSF 6715
Description:  The large cut that the BNSF Railways Southern California Christmas Train is about to pass was, until 2007, the western-most of the two tunnels at Alray on Cajon Pass. The tunnels were removed when this portion of the line was double-tracked (adding a third mainline to BNSFs busy crossing of this pass). When our train reached Summit, where all three mains are together again, the Christmas Train held the center main (where we would reverse direction) while another eastbound passed on our left and a westbound passed on our right. What a thrill it was to be on the business cars open platform for that!

Title:  BNSF 6715
Description:  As dawn breaks in the east, volunteers are already well underway preparing for a busy day on the roads annual Southern California Christmas Train. Snacks need to be stocked in the three cars that will be carrying local disadvantaged children, decorations adjusted and lit, balloons inflated for the balloon sculpters, costumes donned, sound systems readied, goodie bags prepared (BNSF teddy bears!) and, of course, all the standard railroad safety checks performed. In just a few hours, the first trainload of excited children and their parents will be climbing nearby Cajon Pass - for most, their first time aboard a train. And the entire process will be repeated in the afternoon on this December 17, 2011. Everyone riding the train today will leave with a smile - including the crew!

NS 8103
Title:  NS 8103
Description:  An eastbound BNSF Railway intermodal train passes through Hutt as it arrives in Barstow, in California's Mojave Desert, on June 13, 2015. The train is led by BNSF ES44C4 6772, ES44DC 7665 and ES44C4 7604 up front, and the rear Distributed Power Units (DPU) on the rear are BNSF ES44C4 6761 and Norfolk Southern ES44AC 8103 - The NS's Norfolk & Western "Heritage" unit. The desert landscape looks a bit different than where the N&W operated!

BNSF 7241
Title:  BNSF 7241
Description:  BNSF Railway train Z-LACNYC9-11 passes through the busy intersection of Rosecrans and Marquardt in Santa Fe Springs, California. This eastbound train is a Priority UPS-LTL Intermodal train, originating in Los Angeles CA and destined for New York NY. An impressive lash-up of locomotives is powering this train: BNSF ES44DC 7241, BNSF Dash 9-44CW 4528, Norfolk Southern Dash 9-44CW 9702, BNSF ES44DC 7831 and BNSF ES44C4 6888. This grade crossing is one of the most dangerous in the United States because it bisects a busy highway intersection, with a fifth highway joining Rosecrans just beside the crossing - making it a five-way intersection with several trains per hour passing through.

BNSF 6893 - Barstow CA - 12/23/20
Title:  BNSF 6893 - Barstow CA - 12/23/20
Description:  BNSF Railway Intermodal Stack Train S-LPKSCO1-20T, which originated in Kansas City KS and is headed to Long Beach CA, had its crew "die on the law" at Nebo, just four miles from the crew change point in Barstow, at 3:10 am on December 23, 2020. Between furloughed crews and crews taking time off for the holidays, this train sat in Nebo for hours. Reportedly the new crew would not arrive for 26 hours! BNSF ES44C4 6893 is working with EMD SD70ACe-T4 7219 and BNSF ES44DC 7304 to get this train over the road … all it needs is a crew! (Barstow, California – December 23, 2020)

BNSF 7113 - Santa Fe Springs CA - 12/26/20
Title:  BNSF 7113 - Santa Fe Springs CA - 12/26/20
Description:  BNSF Railway Intermodal Stack Train S-LPKSCO1-20T, which originated in Kansas City KS and is headed to Long Beach CA, had its crew "die on the law" at Nebo, just four miles from the crew change point in Barstow, at 3:10 am on December 23, 2020. At that point, the train was running 1 hour 11 minutes ahead of schedule! And there it sat until late on December 25th, after BNSF ES44C4 7113 was added to the consist (now BNSF 7113, BNSF 6893, EMDX 7219, BNSF 7304//BNSF 9289, BNSF 3959, BNSF 9023). But the new crew "died" at Santa Fe Springs, not too far from its final destination, at 2:15 am on December 26, at which point the train was now only 65 hours 21 minutes late! At the time of this photo, the poor train was over 71 hours late, with no sign of a fresh crew. (Santa Fe Springs, California – December 26, 2020)

BNSF 6914
Title:  BNSF 6914
Description:  BNSF Railway train H-KCKBAR9-04A (High Priority Merchandise; Kansas City KS to Barstow CA) rolls through East Danby, California, on the railroad's Transcon mainline across the vast Mojave Desert, and past a cut of stored intermodal well cars on Tuesday, November 6th, 2012. On the point of this 4987' train (66 loads, 16 empties and 9042 tons) is one of the BNSF's A-1-A trucked ES44C4 diesels - a model found (so far) only on the BNSF. 6914 is followed by Dash 9-44CWs 766 (still in the very popular "Superfleet" scheme) and 4435, with a fourth locomotive (Dash 9-44CW 4308) as the rear-end DPU. Note that all three of the lead engines are in different BNSF paint schemes.
