Description:  Sitting in Southern Pacifics West Colton Yard in November 1977 are a pair of former Seaboard Coast Line Baldwin RS12 diesels, on their way to the Oregon California & Eastern Railroad. Marked as OC&E 207 and 209 (their former SCL numbers), these engines will get renumbered once again when they arrive in Oregon - 207 will become OC&E 7908 and 209 will become OC&E 7910. (SCL 207 began life as Seaboard Air Line 1466, and 209 was originally SAL 1468.)

OP&E 14½
Title:  OP&E 14½
Description:  Tucked away in a corner of the Oregon Pacific & Easterns engine facility on September 15, 1979, was their shop switcher, a Plymouth DLC-6 numbered 14½. (It appears someone in the shop had some fun with the numbering!) This engine was built in May 1930 (c/n 3476) for Garfield & Company (Plymouth dealership), San Francisco, CA. It then went to Unemployed Exchange Association, San Francisco, CA, and then to Feather River Pine Mills #A. After that, it was owned by Feather River Railway, who sold it to OP&E in 1968 as their #9, later renumbered to OP&E 14½. While on the Feather River in late 1964 and early 1965, this engine was equipped with a snowplow in an unsuccessful attempt at removing silt that had built up on the line after heavy rains caused the river to back up behind the partially completed Oroville Dam. On the second day, the motor overheated and their GE 44-ton #8 was placed into service shoving the diminutive Plymouth to plow the line.

Description:  The Seattle and North Coast Railroad was a 50-mile long shortline born from remnants of the Milwaukee Road’s operation on Washington’s Olympic Peninsula. The only connection to any other railroad was by car ferry, across Puget Sound to Seattle. By 1984, the railroad ceased operations, due to the costs needed to upgrade the physical plant (due to the bankrupt Milwaukee Road’s deferred maintenance) and a downturn in demand for the pulp, paper, plywood and lumber products produced on the Peninsula at the time the railroad started up. Seen at the S&NC’s ferry landing at Pier 2 in Seattle’s Elliott Bay is SW1200 55, which was originally Milwaukee Road’s #614 (and before that, MILW 1637).

Description:  NP to BN to BNSF ... Built by EMD in August 1957, Burlington Northern GP9 1922 was originally Northern Pacific 337. Just 25 years old, the 1922 is sitting in the dead line at BNs Interbay facility in Seattle, Washington, on September 17th, 1982. This engine would be placed back into service, though, and would even outlive the BN, becoming Burlington Northern Santa Fe 1628.

Description:  Southwest Portland Cements operation in Victorville, California, includes a rail operation between the processing plant and Bell Mountain Quarry. The railroad, built as the Mojave Northern, featured a trio of Fairbanks-Morse H20-44 diesels until the mid-1980s, at which point they were replaced with EMD locomotives. Engine 410 was built in March 1954 as Akron Canton & Youngstown 505. SWPC acquired the engine around 1971, and retired it in 1984. It was then sold to the Center for Transportation & Commerce in Galveston, Texas.

Description:  Six-year and five-month old Southern Pacific B30-7 7823 soaks up some sun at the railroads West Colton Yard in Bloomington, California, on September 5th, 1984. Built by General Electric, these 3000 horsepower diesels featured the usual SP appliances, such as the nose-mounted headlight, cab mounted Gyralight, roof-mounted unintended emergency light (a red Gyralight commonly called a "big hole light") and bell, as well as the distinctive FT-B trucks that were standard on these four-axle GEs.
