UPY 2726 - Anaheim, CA - 3/21/08
Description:
A pair of 3GS21B locomotives, spliced by an RCL unit, lead a Union Pacific local as it runs down the middle of Santa Ana Street in downtown Anaheim. Even though this is right in front of the police station, a pedestrian dashes in front of the train - but it wasnt a close as it appears due to the trains slow speed and the photographers long lens. (Disneyland is about two miles down Harbor Boulevard, which the train is crossing.)

AMTK 99 - Miramar Hill, CA - 9/21/08
Description:
Were all the photographers there to photograph Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie for TMZ? No, they were after more elusive prey: Santa Fe 4-8-4 3751. Amtrak P42DC 99 is gingerly stepping around the southern leg of the wye at the summit of Miramar Hill in San Diego, with 3751 tagging along, backward, on the rear. After taking water on the east leg, the big steamer will be on the point for a short time, and then backed again to Old Town to pick up the train. Leaving San Diego, though, the might Northern will once again be in the lead, and doing most of the heavy lifting, too.

No water tank? No problem! On September 21, 2008, Santa Fe 4-8-4 3751 gets the water in the tender "topped off" while turning on the wye at CP Miramar, at the summit of Miramar Hill in San Diego. A fitting has been added to the bottom of the tender to facilitate the use of a nearby fire hydrant, rather than filling the tank from above as was done "back in the day".

ATSF 3751 - Miramar Hill, San Diego, CA - 9/21/08
Description:
Santa Fe 4-8-4 3751s crew carefully checks for possible derailments as the big engine is backed down the east leg of the wye at the summit of San Diegos Miramar Hill (CP Cumbres). This is industrial trackage, and the rail and roadbed made a lot of groaning in protest of the unexpected weight! The engine will take water before completing the turning manuver and a return to its train, 24 privately owned passenger cars making a day trip as part of the 2008 AAPRCO Convention in San Pedro.

Having just ridden around the famed Tehachapi Loop, the passengers on Amtrak train 14, the northbound "Coast Starlight," enjoy unusual scenery for this train, which is detouring over the Tehachapi Mountains due to bridge work on its normal Coast Line route. This train, in the charge of units 131 and 151 today, has just met its southbound counterpart at Marcel, about five miles back. It is seen here crossing the bridge at the east end of Woodford on November 8, 2008.

Cumberland Mine Railroad SD38-2 1 trundles back to its train at the companys barge loading facility on the Monongahela River. This railroad is isolated from any other railroad, and its lack of connections required the locomotives and cars to be trucked in. CMYX 1 was built as US Steel 1.
