UP 3985 - Salt Lake City, UT - 6/27/82 |
Description: |
Carrying a full load of coal for the days trip to Ogden, the crew of Union Pacific 4-6-6-4 3985 is making sure everything is ready to go before they head out of Salt Lake Citys engine facility on June 27, 1982. The numerous lineside fires started by this engine on this weekend prompted the UP to convert the Challenger to oil firing. |

UP 3985 |
Description: |
On the second day of excursions with Union Pacific 4-6-6-4 3985, the big Challenger envelops its train with coal smoke (yes, it was still coal fired at this time) as it passes the USS Geneva Work steel plant in Vineyard, Utah, on June 27th, 1982. The excursions, one on the 26th and another on the 27th, operated from Salt Lake City to Provo and return. The steel mill is now gone, and the main line has been downgraded to a branch line. |
