UP 844
Title:  UP 844
Description:  To commemorate the upcoming Centennials of New Mexico and Arizona joining the Union in 1912, the Union Pacific Railroad operated one of their two steam locomotives through the two states in November 2011. After touring those two states, the engine and its train entered California on the return trip to the engines home in Cheyenne, Wyoming. The train, with 4-8-4 844 on the head end (and SD70ACe 1996), is passing through the Bombay Beach area of the lower desert, between the Salton Sea and the Chocolate Mountains, on November 17, 2011.

Description:  A fifteen car Union Pacific steam special, led by 4-8-4 844 and SD70ACe 1996, looks kind of small in the vastness of the California desert, as it travels from Yuma, Arizona, to West Colton Yard in Bloomington, California, on November 17, 2011.

Title:  UP 844
Description:  Union Pacific 4-8-4 844, built by Alco, has been on the UPs locomotive roster ever since it was delivered in 1944. After dieselization, the 844 was used on special trains and excursions. One of those special trains is seen here climbing Beaumont Hill at Cabazon, California, on November 17, 2011. The fifteen car train will tie up at West Colton Yard, 36 miles and 90 minutes (yes, 90 minutes!) ahead.

Title:  UP 844
Description:  Union Pacific 4-8-4 844 and its fifteen car train descends southern Californias San Timoteo Canyon (the western side of Beaumont Hill) on November 17, 2011. As it passed, there was virtually no chuffing - only a faint hissing and the sound of the running gear clanking.
