BNSF 599
Title:  BNSF 599
Description:  Resting between runs at BNSF Railways North Yard in Saginaw, Texas, is engine 599. This is the only former Santa Fe Dash 9-44CW that did not retain its original number (such as ATSF 600 becoming BNSF 600), due to the fact that its former number on the Santa Fe was 666. Reportedly, many crews would not take a train with this engine in the consist, and so the BNSF renumbered it into the empty number below the class unit. So, no longer "the beast," perhaps it should now be called the "reformed beast"...

BNSF 693 - San Bernardino CA - 12/18/20
Title:  BNSF 693 - San Bernardino CA - 12/18/20
Description:  BNSF Railway Dash 9-44CW 693 was built by General Electric as Santa Fe 693 in September 1994, one year before the Santa Fe and Burlington Northern would merge to create the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway (later shortened to just BNSF Railway). At the time, the Santa Fe’s new power was being delivered in the attractive red and silver "Superfleet" paint scheme, a throwback to the railway’s earlier, classic "Warbonnet" passenger scheme. The Nineties were a great time to railfan the Santa Fe as a result! While still wearing its original paint, poor BNSF 693 is clearly showing its twenty-six years of service, with the bright red faded to pink, the silver appearing more grayish and rust-colored primer on much of the engine. Still, as weather-beaten as BNSF 693 is, it is a welcome sight among the near endless parade of orange and black diesels found all over the BNSF system. (San Bernardino, California – December 18, 2020)

Title:  BNSF 7824 - San Bernardino CA - 12/18/20
Description:  BNSF Priority UPS-LTL Intermodal train Z-MEMLAC7-15 (Memphis TN to Los Angeles CA), passing through Verdemont as it comes off Cajon Pass, has an interesting engine in its consist. Spliced between ES44DC 7824 and ET44C4 3923 is former Santa Fe Dash 9-44CW 693, still wearing its original 26-year-old "Superfleet" red and silver paint job! ATSF 693 was delivered one year before the Santa Fe merged with the Burlington Northern in September 1995, and while the colors look fairly worn, they are still a welcome sight among the predominantly orange and black BNSF diesels. BNSF 699 - Dolton IL - 09/26/21
Title:  BNSF 699 - Dolton IL - 09/26/21
Description:  Sometimes things can get a little confusing in Chicago, at least to those of us who don’t visit as often as we’d like. BNSF Dash 9-44CW 699, ES44C4 6619, SD70ACe 8408 and ET44C4 3887 are heading eastward with train V-BLUMIN1-26, which is a westbound automobile train heading from Blue Island IL to Minot ND. The previous symbol for this power was a light engine move, D-CHIIHB3-25, so I’m confused. When does it turn west? (Dolton, Illinois – September 26, 2021)

Description:  Twenty-one-thousand six-hundred horsepower, freed from the confines of the Barstow fuel racks, are at work getting BNSF Railway Guaranteed Service Intermodal train Q-LACLPC6-23 up to speed – in this case, 70 mph (112km/h) – as the train heads east on the railway’s Needles Sub. Five different models are powering this train – BNSF ES44CW 7041, SD70ACe 9032, Dash 9-44CW 971, ES44AC 5773 and AC4400CW 5715 – although most of them look so much alike it is hard to tell. BNSF 8325 - Victorville CA - 04/21/21d
Title:  BNSF 8325 - Victorville CA - 04/21/21d
Description:  Navigating the S-curves at Frost, ironically located in the Mojave Desert, is BNSF Guaranteed Service Intermodal train Q-ALTSBD6-19, ferrying hundreds of shipping containers from Alliance, Texas, to San Bernardino, 44 miles ahead. The "usual suspects" – in other words, late-model General Electric diesels – are powering this train: BNSF ES44C4 8325, ES44AC 5863 and Dash 9-44CW 4168 are the cookie-cutter diesels on this train. They pretty much all look alike, but there are a few details (very few) to make them different. A bit. As for this location … In the days when this line was signaled as double-track, current-of-traffic (Rule 251), the line between San Bernardino and Frost, over Cajon Pass, was laid out for left-hand running so that eastbound trains used the easier gradients uphill from San Bernardino. Santa Fe built a "natural crossover" just south of downtown Victorville, at a spot named Frost, where the westbound line climbed up and over the eastbound line as the tracks curve from northeastward to northward. Because there is no longer a real need for the "natural crossover", there is also a set of crossovers, with the usual signals, at Frost (MP 38.0), just at the north end of the ramp up to the crossover bridge. An upcoming program to triple-track this section of BNSFs Cajon Sub will, sadly, soon remove this distinctive, if archaic, track arrangement. And a new highway bridge being built has already rendered this view difficult, if not impossible, so access these days. Not to sound like an old fart (but Im allowed to, as I am one!), but progress isn’t always a railfans friend. (Victorville, California – April 21, 2021)

Description:  BNSF Railways Z-LACNYC9-13A (Priority UPS-LTL Intermodal; Los Angeles CA to New York NY) ascends southern Californias Cajon Pass, which has a lot more trackage today than it did just a few years ago. The BNSF (on which the Union Pacific has trackage rights) has three mainlines here (two in this shot, and another off camera to the left), the UP has the former Southern Pacific Palmdale Cutoff (built in the late 1960s) - seen here just above the train - and the recently built Silverwood crossover connecting the BNSF and UP (just behind the 7575).

BNSF 6387 - Summit, Cajon Pass, CA - 11/6/10
Title:  BNSF 6387 - Summit, Cajon Pass, CA - 11/6/10
Description:  General Electric ES44DCs are borincly common in southern California, so even though the ES44AC on the point of train S-LBPLPC1-05A looks pretty much identical, it is still cause for interest when an ES44AC shhws up this far west. (How pathetic is that? Oh, for the days of wider motive power variety...) Seen here rounding the curve into Cajon Pass Summit (and stretching out downgraje for a mile or so behind), this train is heading from the port at Long Beach, California, to Logistics Park in Chicago, Illinois, behind BNSF engines 6387, 4186, 7484 ang 7388. NS 8118 - Buena Park CA - 08/11/22
Title:  NS 8118 - Buena Park CA - 08/11/22
Description:  Holding Track 2 (of three mainlines) as it awaits an opening at Los Angeles Hobart Yard, and also awaiting a fresh crew as permission to proceed its final 16 miles, is BNSF Guaranteed Service Intermodal train Q-ATGLAC6-28L, which originated in Atlanta, Georgia. "Guaranteed Service" these days, however, likely doesn’t mean what it should, as crew shortages have dozens of westbound trains backed up for hundreds of miles on the BNSFs San Bernardino Sub, Cajon Sub and Needles Sub, creating delays of not just hours, but days. There is another westbound stopped two miles behind this train, and most likely another two miles ahead of it as well. Higher priority trains dont wait as long but a Q-train, the hottest on the BNSF, sitting without a crew would have never happened a few years ago. This train, with Norfolk Southern ES44AC 8118, BNSF ES44DC 7849 and BNSF Dash 9-44CW 4366 for power, was still sitting in the same location the next morning, and when I checked last was 99 hours 3 minutes behind schedule! BNSF 5507
Title:  BNSF 5507
Description:  Proof that people in car-centric southern California do ride trains, as BNSF Railway train S-LPCLBA1-18A (behind Dash 9-44CWs 5507 and 4387, with ES44DCs 7528 and 7274 on thh rear) speeds by the'new parking garage being built (to handle the crowds) adjacent to the Fullerton passenger station (which is in the distance, among the palm trees). Fullerton sees nearly 60 Amtrak and Metrolink passenger trains stop there each weekday and, as it is also on BNSFs busy!Transcon mainline connecting Los Angeles (and the nearby ports) to Chicago, an amazing number of freight trains, too. No wonder it is such a popular railfan hangout. It is rare to wait more then twenty minutes without something coming by!
