Canadian National ES44AC 2976 and Norfolk Southern SD70ACe 1074 await a crew in Champaign, Illinois, on October 1, 2017. This train would eventually depart Champaign after Amtrak train 393, the "Illini," makes its stop in this college town. USN 65-00650
Description:
United States Navy 2GS14B 65-00650 (shortened to just "650") is one of three diesel locomotives that switches cars at the Crane Naval Support Center in Crane, Indiana. Just days prior to being photographed (with permission) on September 29, 2017, much of the lettering on the cab had been removed, as the rail operations at Crane would be transferred to the United States Army on October 2, 2017. With that change, these bright yellow locomotives will soon receive new red paint jobs, in order to conform to the rest of the US Army's railroad fleet.

Description:
Indiana Railroad SD40-2s 4002 and 4006 have just arrived at the railroads Hiawatha Shops on September 29, 2017. INRD 4002 has a special logo honoring First Responders on its long hood. Built in Canada as Burlington Northern 7234, this locomotive became Burlington Northern Santa Fe 7234 following the BN-Santa Fe merger. It was later sold to INRD, which repainted it and numbered it 42.

Description:
Assigned to the Gavilon grain elevator in Browns, Illinois, is Peavy Grain GP9 5000, photographed on September 28, 2017. This locomotive was built for the Milwaukee Road in May 1959, as MILW 311. From the Milwaukee, this engine worked for Indiana Railroad (IRRC 311), Nucor Steel (NUCX 311), and ConAgra (CAGX 5000) and then Peavy.

On October 1, 2017, there wasn't much left of Archer-Midland-Daniels S2 1, as it was being scrapped on-site in Evansville, Indiana. At one time, this little Alco diesel wore an attractive paint scheme, but ADM was unable to locate a buyer for it and opted to cut it up for scrap instead.

FLSX 71 - Lyles Station IN - 09/28/17
Description:
Missouri-Kansas-Texas GP7 1761 rolled out of EMD's factory in December 1952. MKT later renumbered this engine to 120, and it was eventually sold to Central Railroad of Indiana. CIND 1751 eventually found it way to Great Miami (Silver Star Enterprises), which numbered it FLSX 71. On September 28, 2017, this locomotive was working the Consolidated Grain and Barge elevator in Lyles Station, Indiana.

The second locomotive in a southbound Canadian National train (led by CN 2976) is Norfolk Southern's Lackawanna Heritage engine, SD70ACe 1074. After five years, this locomotive is showing a little wear and tear in its special paint job - but it still looks great! Note, too, that it has been retrofitted with PTC antennas. This train was photographed on October 1, 2017, in Champaign, Illinois.

Title:
PREX 806 - Evansville IN - 09/28/17
Description:
Indiana Southwestern (a part of Pioneer Railcorp) GP8 806 was found in Evansville, Indiana, on September 28, 2017, wearing a paint scheme reminiscent of the Nickel Plate Road's diesels. This engine was built as Illinois Central GP7 8969. When Illinois Central Gulf (the railroad's new name after the merger with the Gulf Mobile & Ohio) embarked on a rebuild program of their older GPs, this engine was rebuilt into "GP8" 7969. Eventually, older power, even if rebuilt, becomes a burden and the ICG sold this locomotive to the Iowa Interstate, as IAIS 469. IAIS was doing well and bought new power, so this engine was sold again, this time to IRECO, which numbered it IREX 806. Pioneer Railcorp purchased it, but retained the number (now PREX 806).

HOS 465 - Buffaloville IN - 09/30/17
Description:
Hoosier Southern GP9 465 and GP7 467 are on the point of a 7-car passenger train at Buffaloville, Indiana, on September 30, 2017. HOS 465 was originally Southern Pacific subsidiary Texas & New Orleans 454. T&NO 454 was folded into the parent company in the SP's 1965 renumbering, becoming SP 3658. In 1976, the engine entered the SP's rebuild program at the Sacramento Shops in California, emerging that December as SP GP9E (also often called GP9R) number 3843. After retirement, it passed through a couple of used locomotive dealers before ending up on the Hoosier Southern.

At the Warrick Power Plant in Newburgh, Indiana, there are a pair of SD38-2s that handle the coal cars. Now owned by Respondek Railroad Corporation, engines 21 and 20 were photographed on September 30, 2017. RRS 21 still wears its old Yankeetown Dock colors, while number 20 is painted in the Illinois Terminal-inspired bright green and yellow, and still carries Squaw Creek Southern lettering, albeit with RRC reporting marks. CSXT 2733 - Evansville IN - 09/28/17
Description:
CSX GP38-2 2733 was found in the Pioneer Railway's Harwood Yard (formerly known as Pigeon Creek Siding) on September 28, 2017. This engine was built in February 1973 as Penn Central 8091. When Conrail was formed three years later, it became CR 8091. When Conrail's assets were divvied up between CSX and Norfolk Southern in 1999, this locomotive became the property of CSX Transportation, and was renumbered to CSXT 2733. Just three owners in 44 years? Compared to some engines, that isn't bad. (Photographed on railroad property with permission and full PPE.)

EVWR 3835 - Mount Vernon IN - 09/28/17
Description:
A three-unit set of Evansville Western locomotives lays over for the evening in Mount Vernon, Indiana, on September 28, 2017. Fifty-seven year old EVWR 3835 was built in September 1965 as Gulf Mobile & Ohio GP35 646. When the GM&O merged with the Illinois Central, this engine became Illinois Central Gulf 2543. It was later sold to the Paducah & Louisville (as their 2543), then to VMV, which rebuilt it to GP38-2 specifications (and numbered VMVX 3600), and it was then sold back to the PAL and numbered PAL 3600, before transferring to PAL's sister railroad Evansville Western.

INRD 4002 - Jasonville IN - 09/29/17
Description:
Indiana Railroad has repainted SD40-2 4002 and included a logo thanking First Responders on its long hood. The engine, coupled to SD40-2 4006, is seen at the railroads Hiawatha Yard in Jasonville, Indiana, on September 29, 2017. Due to a heavy workload at the EMD factory in Illinois, this locomotive was built by EMDs Canadian subsidiary GMD in July 1980 for the Burlington Northern Railroad. BN 7234 became Burlington Northern Santa Fe 7234 in 1995, when the BN merged with the Santa Fe. BNSF sold it to the Indiana Railroad, where it became their INRD 42. ISRR 3383 - Edwardsport IN - 09/29/17
Description:
A trio of Indiana Southern SD40-2s (ISRR 3383, 3386 and 3382) were found in Edwardsport, Indiana, on September 29, 2017. The engine on the south end, ISRR 3383, was built in February 1980 as Burlington Northern 7259. With the merger of BN and Santa Fe, the engine became Burlington Northern Santa Fe 7259, and BNSF later sold it to First Union Rail (as FURX 7259). From FURX it ended up on the ISRR.

CSXT 5414 - Evansville IN - 10/01/17
Description:
With the growing season over, the crops that are grown in the flood plain in southern Evansville, Indiana, have been plowed under in preparation for next summer's harvest. The CSX mainline is built upon a long stretch of trestles in order to keep the railroad running whenever the Ohio floods its banks - so there is a prototype for the Atlas trestle set! A southbound CSX intermodal train heads for the bridge across the Ohio River (and on into Kentucky) on October 1, 2017. CSX ES44DC 5414, ES44AC 3024 and ES44DC 5298 are leading this train on a bright, sunny morning.

As the sun sets on the first day of October 2017, a westbound Norfolk Southern intermodal train speeds through the west switch of Dawn siding, in the city of Tolono, Illinois. Archer Daniels Midlands grain elevator in Evansville, Indiana, is switched by SW1200 57. Built in may 1957 as Baltimore & Ohio 9621, it was eventually sold off to Indiana Hi-Rail, as their 221. IHRC 221 was later sold to CNC Logistics (which retained the number 221), and CNC would up selling it to ADM. ADMX 57 was photographed in Evansville IN on October 1, 2017.

The Illinois Central was known as "The Mainline of Mid-America," but now this trackage is a part of Canadian National. So ... Is the Canadian National now "The Mainline of Mid-America?" Rolling through Tolono, Illinois, is a northbound CN freight lead by ES44DC 2223, Dash 8-40CM 2447 and GP40-2L 9402. More colorful than ICs black scheme, but ICs old orange and white scheme was even more colorful.

RRC 5838 - Boonville IN - 09/30/17
Description:
Respondek Railroad Corporation made a wise decision when they resurrected the bright green paint formerly used by Illinois Terminal Railroad, as it is bright enough to make their equipment visible (and not blend in with the safety yellow or orange on high-visibility vests worn by workers these days), and it very attractive color on top of that. Switching the Liberty Coal Mine in Boonville, IN, are a pair of Respondek's SD40-2s: RRC 5838 dressed in green (the former Canadian Pacific 5838, and later Indiana & Ohio Railroad 4084) and RRC 5690, wearing a red scheme and lettered for Squaw Creek Southern (also a former CP engine, later sold to St. Lawrence & Hudson, both of which also numbered it 5690). METX 181 - Chicago IL - 09/26/17
Description:
Chicago Metra train 1235 passes by the coach yard as it departs Union Station and heads southwest to Aurora on September 26, 2017. This engine, METX 181 "Village of Schaumburg," is an EMD F40PH-2 and was recently overhauled and given a new paint job. (Photographed on railroad property with permission and full PPE.)
