NS 9794 - Lilly PA - 09/24/08
Title:  NS 9794 - Lilly PA - 09/24/08
Description:  The cool Autumn air at 1,904 feet (580 m) in Pennsylvania’s Allegheny Mountains has already triggered a few trees to begin changing colors. An eastbound Norfolk Southern intermodal train passes under the old Pennsylvania Railroad position light signals as it climbs the grade. NS Dash 9-44CW 9794 and ES44DC 7606 are powering this double-stack train as it heads to Harrisburg. (Lilly, Pennsylvania – September 24, 2008)

AMTK 451
Title:  AMTK 451
Description:  BNSF Railway 7626, having come from Los Angeles (with 7823 and 4902, as train B-LACLAC3-04) to drop off some baretable intermodal cars, is done with its work and is waiting for a pair of Amtrak trains to pass before continuing its journey. The first train to pass is Amtrak #572, a "Pacific Surfliner" led by F59PHI 451. A quarter-mile ahead is westbound Amtrak #769 and, once it passes, the B-LACLAC3-04 will switch back onto the main and depart westbound for a return trip to L.A. as a deadhead move.

BNSF 7659 - Fullerton, CA - 3/26/11
Title:  BNSF 7659 - Fullerton, CA - 3/26/11
Description:  The trackwork in Fullerton, California, has gotten more complex! Along with the triple track mainline (which ends here, with the left main continuing on to Chicago, and the right main heading south to San Diego, with the middle main splitting to each), there is a new track on the far right for the upcoming Metrolink service between Fullerton and Laguna Niguel / Mission Viejo. This stub end track, complete with a short passing siding, joins the line to San Diego about a quarter mile after rounding this curve. BNSF Railway train S-MEMSCO1-18A (Intermodal Stacks; Memphis TN to Thenard CA) crosses to the northern-most main on its way to the harbor area in Long Beach / Los Angeles, on March 25, 2011.

BNSF 7681 - Bakersfield, CA - 3/13/11
Title:  BNSF 7681 - Bakersfield, CA - 3/13/11
Description:  As BNSF Railway train Z-KCKNBY1-11A (Priority UPS-LTL Intermodal, Kansas City KS to North Bay CA) arrives in Bakersfield the headlight of Union Pacific train ZLCLT 13 (UPS Expedited Intermodal, Los Angeles CA to Lathrop CA, with UP ES44AC 5383 on the head-end) can be seen in the distance. Both trains have just conquered the crossing of the Tehachapi Mountains, and will now have it easy as they head north through Californias flat Central Valley. It appears that the lead ES44DC, 7681, has had a nose job that could use a bit more paint.

BNSF 7711 - mp 58, Cajon Pass, CA - 11/6/10
Title:  BNSF 7711 - mp 58, Cajon Pass, CA - 11/6/10
Description:  Faded GE ES44DCs dominate many of the trains in southern California, as many of the 7700-class units are assigned to trains out of Barstow, including the manifests out of the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, and the train the runs to San Diego. The paint looks horrible because, as I understand it, harsh chemicals are used to remove grafitti and those chemicals also damage the factory applied paint jobs. Ironically, not long before this San Diego to Barstow freight appeared, my San Diego-based brother had been commenting on the lack of variety appearing on the BARSDG / SDGBAR trains. The the M-SDGBAR1-05A (San Diego to Barstow) shows up with an old Santa Fe GP60M, still in sharp-looking Warbonnet colors, much to his surprise!

Title:  BNSF 7714
Description:  Just four minutes after Amtraks eastbound "Southwest Chief" departed Fullerton, BNSF train M-BARWAT1-05A passes through the passenger station there. This Barstow to Watson train is popular with the assembled railfans, as it provides a respite from the nearly endless parade of intermodal trains. Watson Yard, located in Wilmington, near the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, is the destination for a variety of box cars, covered hoppers, flats, gondolas and other "traditional" freight cars.

BNSF 7756
Title:  BNSF 7756
Description:  On the BNSF in the greater Los Angeles area, the vast majority of freight trains are intermodal (and mainly double-stacks). But a "real" freight operates each way each day, ferrying non-containerized goods between Watson (Wilmington CA) and Barstow CA. On September 8th, 2012, the westbound version of this train, the M-BARWAT1-08A (Regular Merchandise; Barstow to Watson) was seen passing through the old Santa Fe station of Atwood in Placentia. The power is the usual 7700-series ES44DCs, along with a treat - GP60M 112 (GP60Ms are used in local service in southern California). While the WATBAR/BARWAT trains are made up of a variety of freight cars (box cars, gondolas, open and covered hoppers, tank cars, flats, etc.) today's train is almost entirely made up of tank cars, with a few covered hoppers interspersed among them. (At first glance, I thought it might be an ethanol train, although there was too much tank car variety for that.) The diverging mainline in the foreground is Metrolink's Olive Subdivision, which heads south to Orange, where it joins the old Santa Fe Surf Line to San Diego.

BNSF 7770
Title:  BNSF 7770
Description:  It was cold enough during the previous night's storm for the snow to get all the way down to Devore, so this dusting at Blue Cut is not a surprise, but is still a welcome sight. With 85 loads and 15 empties (at 11284 tons and 6811' with locos; 6308' without locos), BNSF Railway train M-BARSBD1-09A (Regular Merchandise; Barstow CA to San Bernardino CA) passes through photogenic Blue Cut with, for power, a quartet of ES44DCs (7770, 7747, 7771 and 7760) and 3GS21C-DE switch engine 1310 up front, and ES44DCs 7719 and 7772 on the rear.

AMTK 461 - Fullerton, CA - 12/21/10
Title:  AMTK 461 - Fullerton, CA - 12/21/10
Description:  Running about a half-hour late, San Luis Obispo-bound Amtrak "Pacific Surfliner" #775 departs the station in Fullerton, California, on a rainy December 21, 2010. (This was the fifth of six consecutive days of nearly non-stop rain in southern California.) On the middle-main sits BNSF Railway train S-LHACLO1-21A, waiting for a clear signal after being held so that the passenger train could cross in front of him. The crew on the freight used this break to dodge the raindrops and scurry to the cafe in the station (in the lower right) for some warm coffee while they wait for their clear signal indication.

Title:  BNSF 7792 - Fullerton, CA - 12/21/10
Description:  On December 21, 2010, BNSF Railway train S-LHACLO1-21A holds the middle main in Fullerton, California, waiting for a meet with Amtrak "Pacific Surfliner" #775 (running about a half-hour late). The green indication on the westbound signal is for the passenger train. The crew on the freight used this break to dodge the raindrops and scurry to the cafe in the station (just out of this shot on the right) for a warm coffee while they wait for their clear signal indication. This was the fifth of six consecutive days of nearly non-stop rain in southern California.

Title:  BNSF 7821
Description:  BNSF ES44DC 7821 and Dash 9-44CW 5461 ferry a long line of empty intermodal well cars down Cajon Pass on a snowy February morning. Cajon's famed Mormon Rocks rise in the background, marking California's infamous San Andreas Fault.

BNSF 7824 - San Bernardino CA - 12/18/20
Title:  BNSF 7824 - San Bernardino CA - 12/18/20
Description:  BNSF Priority UPS-LTL Intermodal train Z-MEMLAC7-15 (Memphis TN to Los Angeles CA), passing through Verdemont as it comes off Cajon Pass, has an interesting engine in its consist. Spliced between ES44DC 7824 and ET44C4 3923 is former Santa Fe Dash 9-44CW 693, still wearing its original 26-year-old "Superfleet" red and silver paint job! ATSF 693 was delivered one year before the Santa Fe merged with the Burlington Northern in September 1995, and while the colors look fairly worn, they are still a welcome sight among the predominantly orange and black BNSF diesels. BNSF 7849
Title:  BNSF 7849
Description:  An eastbound BNSF Railway double-stack train, Z-SBDWSP7-26A (Priority UPS-LTL Intermodal; San Bernardino CA to Willow Springs IL), rounds the curve at the east end of Silverwood as it approaches the Summit of Cajon Pass on June 26th, 2015. In just a few seconds, this train will meet a westbound, for which the clear signal on the cantilever in the background is intended.

NS 8118 - Buena Park CA - 08/11/22
Title:  NS 8118 - Buena Park CA - 08/11/22
Description:  Holding Track 2 (of three mainlines) as it awaits an opening at Los Angeles Hobart Yard, and also awaiting a fresh crew as permission to proceed its final 16 miles, is BNSF Guaranteed Service Intermodal train Q-ATGLAC6-28L, which originated in Atlanta, Georgia. "Guaranteed Service" these days, however, likely doesn’t mean what it should, as crew shortages have dozens of westbound trains backed up for hundreds of miles on the BNSFs San Bernardino Sub, Cajon Sub and Needles Sub, creating delays of not just hours, but days. There is another westbound stopped two miles behind this train, and most likely another two miles ahead of it as well. Higher priority trains dont wait as long but a Q-train, the hottest on the BNSF, sitting without a crew would have never happened a few years ago. This train, with Norfolk Southern ES44AC 8118, BNSF ES44DC 7849 and BNSF Dash 9-44CW 4366 for power, was still sitting in the same location the next morning, and when I checked last was 99 hours 3 minutes behind schedule!
