AMTK 250
Title:  AMTK 250
Description:  In April, 1994, Amtrak "San Diegan" #583 arrives at the Irvine, California, station amid construction of the new platforms required for the upcoming second mainline. (With just a single track through the station, though, the signage indicating "Track 1" is overkill.) This was a time of rapid expansion for this line, with double-tracking, new stations and increased service all occurring simultaneously.

AMTK 376
Title:  AMTK 376
Description:  An Amtrak special passes Mission Tower as it crosses the Los Angeles River on its way out of Los Angeles Union Station on July 15th, 1993. F40PHs 376 and 281 are pulling, just behind the baggage car, a Swedish X2000 (also known as X2) trainset, which was touring the country. These trains, constructed by Kalmar Verkstad in Kalmar, Sweden, operated on Swedens Statens Järnvägar (Swedish State Railways), feature tilting technology for high speed operation. This train was headed to Phoenix, Arizona, for another day of display.

AMTK 283
Title:  AMTK 283
Description:  The final run of Amtraks state-supported overnight Sacramento to Los Angeles train, the "Spirit of California," has arrived in Los Angeles on October 1st, 1983. This service operated just two years before then-new governor George Deukmejian cut funding for the train. The train was no more, and things looked bleak for rail service in the early 1980s - even the iconic clock tower of Los Angeles Union Passenger Terminal (in the background) looks shabby. But while the "Spirit" would not return, passenger service in the Golden State would soon be booming, and Union Station would be served by not just Amtrak, but also Metrolink commuter trains and, improbably to us in 1983, even a subway and light rail trolleys! And Union Station itself would be restored to a brilliance it hadnt seen in decades, including the restoration of tracks that had been gone for years.
