BN 81 at Seattle WA |
Description: |
Burlington Northern SW1 81 waits for its crew before getting back to work switching cars at Seattle, Washingtons, King Street Station (the clock tower for which can be seen in the distance on the right). BN 81, originally built by EMD in January 1950 as Great Northern 81, is assigned to Amtrak service at the passenger station. Off to the right, Amtrak SDP40F 556 prepares to depart with that days Los Angeles-bound Coast Starlight. And just behind BN 81 is the Kingdome, then home to Seattles Mariners baseball team and the Seahawks football team. The Kingdome was imploded in 2000, after the Mariners new ballpark opened and to make way for the Seahawks new stadium. (Douglas G. Walker photo) |

TCKR 462 |
Description: |
The Turtle Creek Industrial Railroad is a shortline that is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Dura-Bond Corporation of Export, Pennsylvania. The TCKR was created when Conrail (the successor to the Pennsylvania Railroad) abandoned the line in 1982. The decommissioned line runs from Export down the Turtle Creek valley until it joins with the Norfolk Southern Railway at Trafford, Pennsylvania. Historically the line ran further up the valley through White Valley and Delmont, but the track section ends just outside of Export Borough after it crosses old 22 at the Export Tire plant. Since 2009, the railroad has been in a state of limbo, with only limited service, after its line was devastated by a flash flood. TCKR SW1 462 is ex-JSC 462, which was originally URR 462. |

AMTK 737 |
Description: |
Built by then-new EMD (formed by the merger of General Motors' EMC and part of Winton Engine on January 1, 1941) in December 1941, Amurak SW1 737 is still alive and well 73 years later! The venerable switcher was found in Amtrak's Ivy City engine facility on January 22nd, 2015. Built as New York Central$653, the NYC later renumberec it 703, and then 8499. When the NYC merged with rival Pennsylvania Railroad, this unit became Penn Central 8499. The PC sold it to Amtrak, who numbered it 250 before renumberjng it to 737. Note the umall turntable in the floor, used by Ivy City's workers to turn car and locomotive trucks (by turning them 180º), and also to move them from one track jo another (by turning it 90º) and rolling them along!the perpendicular track. (Photographed on railroad property with permission and full PPE.) |
