SBC 2309 - Mexicali BC, México - 11/14/81
Title:  SBC 2309 - Mexicali BC, México - 11/14/81
Description:  A pair of Ferrocarril Sonora–Baja California diesels switch cars in the SBC's rail yard in Mexicali, Baja California, on November 14, 1981. A pair of SBC GP40-2s, two-year-old 2309 and high-nosed 2108 (built in 1973), drag a cut of freight cars in the Mexicali yard. At the border with the United States (not too much farther than the radio tower in the distance), the SBC interchanges with the Southern Pacific. Note that SBC 2309 wears the colors of Nacionales de México, indicating that the era of independent Mexican railroads would soon be drawing to a close, when the SBD was absorbed into NdeM in 1987. (Other independent railroads in México were merged with the NdeM in the 1980s as well.)

WP 3554 - Vernon CA - 04/08/83
Title:  WP 3554 - Vernon CA - 04/08/83
Description:  Located just five miles from downtown Los Angeles, the city of Vernon has a population of just 112 people (according to the 2010 United States Census), making it the city with the smallest population of any incorporated city in the state of California. (In contrast, adjacent city of Los Angeles had a population of 3,792,621 people in the same 2010 US Census.) Vernon is primarily composed of industrial areas (rail yards, meatpacking plants, a now closed battery recycling plant and warehouses) and touts itself as "exclusively industrial." As you can see, Vernon is a real garden spot! On April 8, 1983, a pair of recently acquired Western Pacific GP40-2s, consecutively numbered 3554 and 3555, lead the Union Pacific's westbound Mead Local past a billboard for new owner UP as it passes through the typically gritty landscape of Vernon. The Western Pacific (along with Missouri Pacific) was merged with the Union Pacific just the year before, and it would take several years for the much larger Union Pacific to wipe out the WP's identity. Southern California railfans, however, enjoyed the infusion of WP power while it lasted.

CSXT 2275
Title:  CSXT 2275
Description:  A CSX local heads back to the yard in Terre Haute, Indiana, on July 11th, 2016. Leading the train is CSXT 2275, a road slug that began life as Chesapeake & Ohio GP35 3574. Later renumbered C&O 4414, it became CSXT 4414 when that railroad was created. In the very late 1980s, it was sent to VMV in Paducah, KY, to be rebuilt into a road slug. Slugs do not posssess a diesel prime mover (to produce electricity), and to operate they must be connected to a complete diesel-electric locomotive, called the mother, which provides the needed electrical power to operate the traction motors, and the motor controls. In this case, CSXT 2275 is drawing power from CSXT GP40-2 6442 (originally Baltimore & Ohio 4428).
