The setting sun glints off the power on a Southern Pacific eastbound at Walnut, California, on October 18th, 1980. Power for this train is SD40R 7302 (ex-SD40 8422), SD40T-2 8517, GP40-2 7616 and U33C 8701 - The wide variety of power such as this on one train is what made the Espee such a favorite with railfans. |

SP 7342 - West Colton Yard, Bloomington, CA - 8/29/81 |
Description: |
SP SD40E 7342 (ex-SD40 8470) wore a unique paint scheme for a short time. Painted orange and gray, with scarlet ends, the lettering on the right side was white and on the left was red. The nose wings differed, too, as on the left side there were no orange "fingers" protruding into the scarlet. This engine, seen here at West Colton Yard in Bloomington, California, on August 29, 1981, would in short order be repainted into yet another experimental scheme with more scarlet, matching the scheme worn by rebuilt SD45 7399. |

SP 7347 |
Description: |
the Southern Pacific Railroad was an official sponsor of the 1984 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles, California. As such, they promoted the Games with a special paint scheme applied to SD40R 7347 (the former SD40 8479) and a fleet of 45 "Golden Pig" highway trailers. This colorful engine was assigned as a helper, along with red and orange SD40R 7342 (ex-SD40 8470), in southern California when former Southern Pacific "Daylight" 4-8-4 4449 was heading west on its way back from New Orleans, Louisiana, where the 1984 Worlds Fair was taking place. The two engines are seen in Loma Linda after cutting off the "Worlds Fair Daylight" had completed its crossing of nearby Beaumont Hill on June 17th, 1984. Note the gold-painted P-3 air horn and the "1932" and 1984" numberboards, which commemorated not only the 1984 Olympics, but also the Games other occurrence in Los Angeles in 1932. |
