In over forty years of railfanning, I've seen a few strange things ... And this is the latest. The rear coupler on Iowa Interstate GP38-2 716 (ex-LLPX 2328, ex-UP 452, ex-UP 1952, ex-EMDX 817, ex-CR 8017, nee-PC 8017) has a homemade knuckle, created from a length of rectangular tubing. I assume that it was meant for some duty other than coupling to another coupler. Photo taken on railroad property with permission and while wearing required safety gear (PPE). |

I photographed it, but sometimes I wonder why ... The railroads spend a lot of money applying paint to their equipment, only to have some twit with some spray cans ruin it. Union Pacific GP38-2 1961 is seen in Anaheim, California, on September 30th, 2000. This engine is the former EMDX 829, which was Conrail 8029 and, before that, Penn Central 8029 (built in August 1972). This engine was later renumbered to UP 461 before the UP sold it to Locomotive Leasing Partners as their LLPX 2294 (and LLP repainted it, so the taggers work is now gone). |

CSX GP38-2 2733 was found in the Pioneer Railway's Harwood Yard (formerly known as Pigeon Creek Siding) on September 28, 2017. This engine was built in February 1973 as Penn Central 8091. When Conrail was formed three years later, it became CR 8091. When Conrail's assets were divvied up between CSX and Norfolk Southern in 1999, this locomotive became the property of CSX Transportation, and was renumbered to CSXT 2733.
