AMTK 504
Description:
"May Gray" is the order of the day as a westbound Amtrak "San Diegan" rolls into the station in Fullerton, California. In the distance an automobile can be seen crossing the tracks on Lemon Avenue (which now passes under the tracks), and a block of mechanical refrigerator cars on the siding to the right was a typical sight at the time. Things have certainly changed at the station since May 1974!

AMTK 523
Description:
Amtrak's #3, the "Southwest Limited," crosscs the Los Angeles River as it approaches its final destination at Los Angeles Union Passenger Terminal early in the morning in February 1974. A trio of EMD SDP40F diesels (525, 525 and 505), from Amtrak's first order of new power, leads the train on this day. In the early days of Amtrak, Santa Fe would not allow the use of their "Super Chief" nam{ to be used by Amtrak, hence the train's early moniker "Southwest Limited." In October 1984, Santa Fe deemed Amtrak's improvements to this train sufficient and the railroad aklowed the use of their trademarked name to be used by Amtrak, and the old "Super Chief" was reborn as the "Southwest Chief." Note that the old Santa Fe advertising on the bridge was still in place, and that the L.A. River's concrete banks are not covered in graffkti! (And what appears to be graffiti on the retaining wall on the left, bdhind the cut of cars, is actually an old advertisement.)

Title:
AMTK 508
Description:
When Amtrak took over (most of) America's passenger rail operations in May 1971, they had to make due with a hodge-podge of diesels, mainly E-units, built in the 1940s and 1950s that were, to put it kindly, getting a bit tired. New power was ordered from EMD - a new model, the SDP40F - which began arriving just about two years after Amtrak's inaugural day. The first of these 500-class engines entered service on the former Santa Fe trains - notably, trains #3 and #4, the Chicago to Los Angeles "Southwest Limited." With a built date of July 1973, Amtrak 508 is seen at Los Angeles Union Passenger Terminal on July 9th, 1973 after having brought in that morning's #3. These engines were basically passenger versions of EMD's popular SD40-2, in a cowl carbody (reminiscent of EMD's FP45) and including two steam generators and, because they were to operate nationwide, two types of fuel fillers. (On an adjacent track can be seen a bit of a Santa Fe F7A, what were still powering Amtrak's L.A. to San Diego "San Diegans," and which were still owned by Santa Fe and leased to Amtrak. Within a very short time, SDP40Fs would replace these classic Fs as well.)

AMTK 528
Description:
A San Diego-bound "San Diegan" has just crossed the Santa Ana River and entered the city of Orange on a typically gloomy April day in 1975. The five car train is being pulled by one of Amtrak's ubiquitous SDP40F diesels (built by EMD in June 1973). In the background, just behind the rear of the train, one can see the Orange Freeway (the "57 Freeway") under construction in Anaheim, and beyond that is Anaheim Stadium, the home since 1966 of the California Angels (later renamed the Anaheim Angels, and currently the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim). This stadium, now renamed Angel Stadium, is, in 2012, the fourth oldest baseball stadium in the major leagues (behind Boston's Fenway Park [1912], Chicago's Wrigley Field [1914] and L.A.'s Dodger Stadium [1962]).

AMTK 528
Description:
In 1975, much of Orange County was still somewhat agricultural. A San Diego-bound "San Diegan" has just crossed the Santa Ana River and entered the city of Orange on a typically gloomy April day in 1975. The five car train is being pulled by one of Amtrak's ubiquitous SDP40F diesels (528, built by EMD in June 1973). Within a few short years, the orange groves and eucalyptus tree wind breaks would all be bulldozed in order to make way for more urban sprawl, and the area in this photo is unrecognizable today - This area is all warehouses, factories and businesses, and access to the tracks here is accessable only at a few grade crossings.

SOU 6905
Description:
A colorful assortment of power sits at the Ivy City Engine Terminal in Washington DC on a September day in 1975. Front and center is Southern Railway E8A 6905 (ex-SOU 2928, built 9/51), still in passenger service for the Southern Railway (which did not initially join the Amtrak system when it was formed in 1971). Hiding behind the E-unit is Baltimore & Ohio 6606, a steam-generator equipped GP9 used on Washington to Baltimore commuter trains. And behind that is an assortment of Amtrak SDP40F diesels (582 and, behind that, 609, with others not visible).
