The Salt Lake City area has experienced a commuter rail renaissance lately, with three TRAX light rail lines in operation and Front Runner heavy rail commuter trains – all operated by the Utah Transit Authority (UTA). On a stormy August 10, 2012, afternoon, Front Runner train #4 passes under the six-track signal bridge and across the grade crossing at W 400 N (SLC is on the only city I know of that names their streets in such a manner) as it approaches Union Pacifics North Yard. UTAX MP36PH-3C 9, built by Motive Power Industries (Boise, ID) leads coach 201 and cab cars 113 and 120 as the train makes its way from downtown Salt Lake northward to Ogden. |

Amtrak train #860 is scheduled to operate from Oceanside to San Bernardino. But on June 26, 2010, the train originated in San Clemente due to some major track work being performed north of Oceanside. Here we see train #860, with F59PH 869 on the point (and MP36PH-3C 892 on the rear) running about a half-hour late as it crosses the mighty Santa Ana River, and also crosses from Orange into Anaheim (as the river also serves as the city line). |

| Description: |
Southern California's Metrolink commuter train service has been in operation since 1991, and at rush hour the stations become a sea of humanity - imagine that; not everyone is stuck on the freeway! Fullerton, not far from Disneyland, sees Metrolink service between Los Angeles and southern points (Irvine, Laguna Niguel/Mission Viejo and Oceanside) and cities to the east (Riverside) as well. Here train 706 (a Los Angeles to Riverside train) disgorges passengers at the venerable old Santa Fe station (built in 1930) right on time. In moments, the train will depart and, at the end of the platform, switch to the middle main, as the track it is on heads south to Oceanside (and eventually San Diego) rather than east to Riverside (and Chicago). |
