UP 2528
Title:  UP 2528
Description:  A Union Pacific intermodal train heads east through Palm Springs, California. It is also the location of the Amtrak station, which is the low adobe structure just to the left of UP ES44AC 2528. Up front are UP 2528 and UP 7788, and the rear Distributed Power Units (DPU) are UP 5366 and SP 187 - one of the few remaining unpatched Southern Pacific AC4400CWs. And the windmills? Yes, it is almost always windy here! (The joke is that it would be much less windy if they'd just turn off all those damn fans!!!)

UP 2552
Title:  UP 2552
Description:  Union Pacific ES44AC 2552 and SD70ACe 8363 (with two more SD70ACes, 8826 and 8809, for rear DPUs) are on the head-end of 7854’ train ZMQLC-12 as it winds through the orange groves along the edge of Redlands, California, on August 13, 2016. This is a scene reminiscent of my youth, when orange groves could be found all over southern California. The trains looked different back then, though ...

UP 2756
Title:  UP 2756
Description:  Union Pacific train ILXG4X 17 stretches out for over a mile (6671 feet, to be exact) as it passes the Palm Springs Amtrak station (back in the trees on the left) in Palm Springs (the railroad calls it West Palm Springs), California, on November 18, 2017. A trio of clean engines - UP ES44AC 2756 and a pair of AC4400CWs (6607 and 6880) - are powering this Los Angeles Harbor to Elwood IL (Global 4) double stack train as it descends Beaumont Hill on the old Southern Pacific Sunset Route - now called the Yuma Subdivision on the Union Pacific.

UP 8134
Title:  UP 8134
Description:  Union Pacific train ZLAMQ-13 climbs the grade through San Timoteo Canyon on August 13, 2016, as UP ES44AC 8134, SD70M 4285 and ES44AC 7705 (with UP ES44AC 8062 on the rear) work hard to lift this 7954-foot train over the mountains. This is the old Southern Pacific Sunset Route, and the summit of this pass is Beaumont, for which this mountain crossing is named (Beaumont Hill) as trains head east out of southern California for Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and points east.

UP 8227
Title:  UP 8227
Description:  The temperature in Banning, California, was approaching 100º as Union Pacific ES44AC 8227, with train ZCIG4-13 in tow, passed through, but higher temperatures (118º!) lay ahead as this train was heading for Indio and Yuma, in the "low" desert. (Low enough that this train will operate from Banning's 2349' elevation to 220' BELOW sea level as the old SP Sunset Route skirts the Salton Sea in another 80 miles.)
