BNSF 7200 - Rocket Site, CA - 3/12/10
Description:
Along the northern edge of Edwards Air Force Base, in Californias Mojave Desert, runs the former Santa Fe line that connects Richmond, in the Bay Area, with Barstow and points east. At milepost 788.3 is a spot called Rocket Site and it is here, with the Tehachapi Mountains as a backdrop, that we see train G-PASBAR4-05 (Grain - Pasco, WA, to Barstow, CA) hustling east behind a trio of ES44DC diesels, and a single Dash 9-44CW (with another pair of Dash 9s shoving on the rear). BNSF 7200 on the point wears the orange and black scheme introduced in 2005.

BNSF 5200 - Mormon Rocks, Cajon Pass, CA - 11/13/10
Description:
Cajon Pass famed "Mormon Rocks" are a series of cemented sandstone beds much more resistant to erosion than the surrounding gravel and silt sands, giving them a pockmarked appearance. Officially called the Rock Candy Mountains, the strange rock formations are one of the youngest and most active geological regions in North America. Formed by the overlapping of the Baja Plate and the North American Plate, the Mormon Rocks (so nicknamed because this was the preferred route of Amasa Lymand and Charles Rich, who led a band of Mormon settlers from Salt Lake City across the Mojave Desert in 1851) are a visible indicator of the San Andreas Fault (where the two aforementioned tectonic plates collide). BNSF Railway ethanol train G-RAVWAT7-06A (Ravenna NE to Watson CA), led by Dash 9-44CW 5200, threads its way through "the Rocks" on November 13, 2010.

BNSF 5200 - Swarthout Road, Cajon Pass, CA - 11/13/10
Description:
On November 13, 2010, BNSF Railway G-RAVWAT7-06A (loaded ethanol, Ravenna NE to Watson CA) rounds the curve approaching Swarthout Road, just east of Blue Cut in Cajon Pass. Power for this train is Dash 9-44CW 5200, ES44DC 7206, ES44C4 6608 and ES44DC 7686 (with ES44C4 6605 and ES44DC 7381 for the rear DPU). Note the faux rock retaining wall in the background, installed when this line was triple-tracked a couple years previously.

BNSF 7209
Description:
On February 9th, 2013, BNSF Railway train Z-SBDALT9-09A, a 6526' (without locomotives, 6891' with them), 4275 ton intermodal train heading from San Bernardino CA to Alliance TX, threads its way around the curves as it grinds its way up southern California's Cajon Pass. Just beyond this crossing of Cajon Creek is the site of the old Cajon station, where the three BNSF mainlines split, with two of them taking a slightly more circuitous route up the hill. A quartet of modern GE power is on the headend: ES44DC 7209, ES44C4 6833, Dash 9-44CW 5072 and ES44DC 7445. The elevation here is just under 3000', and there is a light dusting of snow from the previous night's storm.

BNSF 7219 - Fullerton, CA - 3/28/11
Description:
It can be a madhouse on weekday afternoons in Fullerton, California, as there are nineteen passenger train movements (Amtrak and Metrolink) between 2:59 and 7:04 PM. And, of course, the BNSF Railway is trying to move freight among all these trains, so the BNSFs dispatchers are kept very busy. On the afternoon of Monday, March 28th, 2011, BNSF train Z-WSPLAC1-26A (behind GEs 7219, 7838, 5070 and 7576) blasts through the station on the middle main, heading to Los Angeles from Willow Springs, Illinois.

BNSF 7222 - Silverwood, Cajon Pass, CA - 11/13/10
Description:
Just a few years ago, BNSFs line over Cajon Pass (which they share with Union Pacific) was triple-tracked and a connection between the BNSF lines and the UPs former SP Colton Cutoff was installed just beyond the cantilever signal seen here. Here we see train Z-LACWSP9-13L (Priority UPS-LTL Intermodal; Los Angeles CA to Willow Springs IL) swinging around the last curve before reaching Summit.

BNSF 7241
Description:
BNSF Railway train Z-LACNYC9-11 passes through the busy intersection of Rosecrans and Marquardt in Santa Fe Springs, California. This eastbound train is a Priority UPS-LTL Intermodal train, originating in Los Angeles CA and destined for New York NY. An impressive lash-up of locomotives is powering this train: BNSF ES44DC 7241, BNSF Dash 9-44CW 4528, Norfolk Southern Dash 9-44CW 9702, BNSF ES44DC 7831 and BNSF ES44C4 6888. This grade crossing is one of the most dangerous in the United States because it bisects a busy highway intersection, with a fifth highway joining Rosecrans just beside the crossing - making it a five-way intersection with several trains per hour passing through.

BNSF 7267 - Fullerton, CA - 12/21/10
Description:
BNSF Railway train Q-LACALT1-21A (Guaranteed Service Intermodal; Los Angeles CA - Alliance TX) crosses over at the end of triple track as it approaches Fullerton Junction. The junction is where the former Santa Fe Surf Line diverges to head to San Diego and the former Santa Fe mainline head east to Chicago. Leading this train through a driving rain are ES44DC 7267 and Dash 9-44CWs 5216 and 5250. The tri-light signals are new, having recently replaced classic searchlight signals.

Progress comes to Fullerton Junction, and the old, classic Santa Fe-style cantilever signals have given way to a new cantilever that doesnt have quite the same "railroadiness". BNSF Railway train Z-ATGLAC1-18D rounds the curve and is about to pass the Amtrak station (the old Santa Fe Surf Line to San Diego is in the foreground).

Description:
BNSF Railways Z-LACNYC9-13A (Priority UPS-LTL Intermodal; Los Angeles CA to New York NY) ascends southern Californias Cajon Pass, which has a lot more trackage today than it did just a few years ago. The BNSF (on which the Union Pacific has trackage rights) has three mainlines here (two in this shot, and another off camera to the left), the UP has the former Southern Pacific Palmdale Cutoff (built in the late 1960s) - seen here just above the train - and the recently built Silverwood crossover connecting the BNSF and UP (just behind the 7575).

BNSF 6893 - Barstow CA - 12/23/20
Description:
BNSF Railway Intermodal Stack Train S-LPKSCO1-20T, which originated in Kansas City KS and is headed to Long Beach CA, had its crew "die on the law" at Nebo, just four miles from the crew change point in Barstow, at 3:10 am on December 23, 2020. Between furloughed crews and crews taking time off for the holidays, this train sat in Nebo for hours. Reportedly the new crew would not arrive for 26 hours! BNSF ES44C4 6893 is working with EMD SD70ACe-T4 7219 and BNSF ES44DC 7304 to get this train over the road … all it needs is a crew! (Barstow, California – December 23, 2020)

At that point, the train was running 1 hour 11 minutes ahead of schedule! And there it sat until late on December 25th, after BNSF ES44C4 7113 was added to the consist (now BNSF 7113, BNSF 6893, EMDX 7219, BNSF 7304//BNSF 9289, BNSF 3959, BNSF 9023). But the new crew "died" at Santa Fe Springs, not too far from its final destination, at 2:15 am on December 26, at which point the train was now only 65 hours 21 minutes late! At the time of this photo, the poor train was over 71 hours late, with no sign of a fresh crew. (Santa Fe Springs, California – December 26, 2020)

Description:
On Tuesday, July 12th, 2011, the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus (red unit) train (BNSF symbol U-FRSSDG1-12A) passes under the classic signal bridge at the north end of Mojave after having conquered the crossing of the Tehachapi Mountains as the show relocates from Fresno, CA, to San Diego (arrival in San Diego will be in the wee hours of the morning the next day). The train has three BNSF ES44DCs (7315, 7646 and 7216) on the point, and is made up of 59 cars (34 coaches, 18 flats, 4 stock cars, 2 COFC and 1 bi-level auto rack) - 4290 tons and 5235 feet in length (not counting the diesels) - nearly a mile long!

BNSF Railway symbols loaded ethanol trains as grain trains, which makes sense, I suppose, since ethanol is derived from corn. At the western portion of BNSF Railway's Transcon line between Chicago and Los Angeles, train S-LPCLBJ1-05A (Intermodal Stacks; originating at Logistics Park in Chicago IL headed for Pier J at the port of Long Beach CA) hustles through Atwood (the old Santa Fe station name which is now part of Placentia), California. ES44DCs 7386 and 7481 are on the headend, and ES44DC 7443 and ES44C4 6848 are the rear Distributed Power Units (DPU), pulling a long string of well cars loaded with containers. (The QZ on the Whistle Post sign indicates that this is a "Quiet Zone" and the train is not allowed to whistle for grade crossings, as it upsets the delicate sensibilities of the NIMBYs who live alongside the mainline.)

General Electric ES44DCs are borincly common in southern California, so even though the ES44AC on the point of train S-LBPLPC1-05A looks pretty much identical, it is still cause for interest when an ES44AC shhws up this far west. (How pathetic is that? Oh, for the days of wider motive power variety...) Seen here rounding the curve into Cajon Pass Summit (and stretching out downgraje for a mile or so behind), this train is heading from the port at Long Beach, California, to Logistics Park in Chicago, Illinois, behind BNSF engines 6387, 4186, 7484 ang 7388. Description:
BNSF Railway 7626, having come from Los Angeles (with 7823 and 4902, as train B-LACLAC3-04) to drop off some baretable intermodal cars, is done with its work and is waiting for a pair of Amtrak trains to pass before continuing its journey. The first train to pass is Amtrak #572, a "Pacific Surfliner" led by F59PHI 451. BNSF 7659 - Fullerton, CA - 3/26/11
Description:
The trackwork in Fullerton, California, has gotten more complex! Along with the triple track mainline (which ends here, with the left main continuing on to Chicago, and the right main heading south to San Diego, with the middle main splitting to each), there is a new track on the far right for the upcoming Metrolink service between Fullerton and Laguna Niguel / Mission Viejo. This stub end track, complete with a short passing siding, joins the line to San Diego about a quarter mile after rounding this curve. BNSF Railway train S-MEMSCO1-18A (Intermodal Stacks; Memphis TN to Thenard CA) crosses to the northern-most main on its way to the harbor area in Long Beach / Los Angeles, on March 25, 2011.

BNSF 7681 - Bakersfield, CA - 3/13/11
Description:
As BNSF Railway train Z-KCKNBY1-11A (Priority UPS-LTL Intermodal, Kansas City KS to North Bay CA) arrives in Bakersfield the headlight of Union Pacific train ZLCLT 13 (UPS Expedited Intermodal, Los Angeles CA to Lathrop CA, with UP ES44AC 5383 on the head-end) can be seen in the distance. Both trains have just conquered the crossing of the Tehachapi Mountains, and will now have it easy as they head north through Californias flat Central Valley. It appears that the lead ES44DC, 7681, has had a nose job that could use a bit more paint.

BNSF 7711 - mp 58, Cajon Pass, CA - 11/6/10
Description:
Faded GE ES44DCs dominate many of the trains in southern California, as many of the 7700-class units are assigned to trains out of Barstow, including the manifests out of the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, and the train the runs to San Diego. The paint looks horrible because, as I understand it, harsh chemicals are used to remove grafitti and those chemicals also damage the factory applied paint jobs. Ironically, not long before this San Diego to Barstow freight appeared, my San Diego-based brother had been commenting on the lack of variety appearing on the BARSDG / SDGBAR trains. The the M-SDGBAR1-05A (San Diego to Barstow) shows up with an old Santa Fe GP60M, still in sharp-looking Warbonnet colors, much to his surprise!

BNSF 7714
Description:
Just four minutes after Amtraks eastbound "Southwest Chief" departed Fullerton, BNSF train M-BARWAT1-05A passes through the passenger station there. This Barstow to Watson train is popular with the assembled railfans, as it provides a respite from the nearly endless parade of intermodal trains. Watson Yard, located in Wilmington, near the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, is the destination for a variety of box cars, covered hoppers, flats, gondolas and other "traditional" freight cars.
