BNSF 7725 |
Description: |
The BARWAT, BNSF Railways daily merchandise train from Barstow to Watson, California, provides some variety from the steady parade of intermodal trains found on this line. On March 30th, 2012, this train had ES44DC 7725 on the head-end as it split the signals at the east end of the station platforms. |

BNSF 7727 |
Description: |
Most of the trains operated by BNSF Railway between Los Angeles and Barstow are intermodal trains. Relief from these is provided by a few trains headed into and out of Watson, California, that feature "real" freight cars. Crossing the Mojave Rivers through-truss bridges is train M-BARWAT1-11A (merchandise, Barstow to Watson), with a mix of covered hoppers, tank cars and box cars. |

BNSF 7756 |
Description: |
On the BNSF in the greater Los Angeles area, the vast majority of freight trains are intermodal (and mainly double-stacks). But a "real" freight operates each way each day, ferrying non-containerized goods between Watson (Wilmington CA) and Barstow CA. On September 8th, 2012, the westbound version of this train, the M-BARWAT1-08A (Regular Merchandise; Barstow to Watson) was seen passing through the old Santa Fe station of Atwood in Placentia. The power is the usual 7700-series ES44DCs, along with a treat - GP60M 112 (GP60Ms are used in local service in southern California). While the WATBAR/BARWAT trains are made up of a variety of freight cars (box cars, gondolas, open and covered hoppers, tank cars, flats, etc.) today's train is almost entirely made up of tank cars, with a few covered hoppers interspersed among them. (At first glance, I thought it might be an ethanol train, although there was too much tank car variety for that.) The diverging mainline in the foreground is Metrolink's Olive Subdivision, which heads south to Orange, where it joins the old Santa Fe Surf Line to San Diego. |

AMTK 461 - Fullerton, CA - 12/21/10 |
Description: |
Running about a half-hour late, San Luis Obispo-bound Amtrak "Pacific Surfliner" #775 departs the station in Fullerton, California, on a rainy December 21, 2010. (This was the fifth of six consecutive days of nearly non-stop rain in southern California.) On the middle-main sits BNSF Railway train S-LHACLO1-21A, waiting for a clear signal after being held so that the passenger train could cross in front of him. The crew on the freight used this break to dodge the raindrops and scurry to the cafe in the station (in the lower right) for some warm coffee while they wait for their clear signal indication. |

Description: |
BNSF Priority UPS-LTL Intermodal train Z-MEMLAC7-15 (Memphis TN to Los Angeles CA), passing through Verdemont as it comes off Cajon Pass, has an interesting engine in its consist. Spliced between ES44DC 7824 and ET44C4 3923 is former Santa Fe Dash 9-44CW 693, still wearing its original 26-year-old "Superfleet" red and silver paint job! ATSF 693 was delivered one year before the Santa Fe merged with the Burlington Northern in September 1995, and while the colors look fairly worn, they are still a welcome sight among the predominantly orange and black BNSF diesels. NS 8118 - Buena Park CA - 08/11/22 |
Description: |
Holding Track 2 (of three mainlines) as it awaits an opening at Los Angeles Hobart Yard, and also awaiting a fresh crew as permission to proceed its final 16 miles, is BNSF Guaranteed Service Intermodal train Q-ATGLAC6-28L, which originated in Atlanta, Georgia. "Guaranteed Service" these days, however, likely doesn’t mean what it should, as crew shortages have dozens of westbound trains backed up for hundreds of miles on the BNSFs San Bernardino Sub, Cajon Sub and Needles Sub, creating delays of not just hours, but days. There is another westbound stopped two miles behind this train, and most likely another two miles ahead of it as well. Higher priority trains dont wait as long but a Q-train, the hottest on the BNSF, sitting without a crew would have never happened a few years ago. This train, with Norfolk Southern ES44AC 8118, BNSF ES44DC 7849 and BNSF Dash 9-44CW 4366 for power, was still sitting in the same location the next morning, and when I checked last was 99 hours 3 minutes behind schedule!
