Amtrak train 583, one of the days twelve northbound "Pacific Surfliners," passes through the city of Orange, California, on May 30, 2010. The engine, F59PHI, is wearing a special scheme to celebrate the "Pacific Surfliners" tenth anniversary (these trains used to be called "San Diegans"). From this angle, and with a long lens, the crookedness of the lettering on this engine is readily apparent.

Description:
Two Amtrak anniversary engines in one place! Amtrak P42 145, the first of several engines painted in "retro" schemes to celebrate the passenger carriers 40th anniversary in 2011, has just arrived in Los Angeles on its first trip to the west (on train #1, the "Sunset Limited"). On the adjacent "escape" track sits Amtrak F59PHI 457, wearing a special scheme to commemorate the "Pacific Surfliner" services 10th anniversary in 2010. Note only is this an unusual view of the 457s rear, but also note the damage to the pilot on 145, the result of a grade crossing accident in San Antonio the previous day.

Description:
Amtrak "Pacific Surfliner" #784 is due to depart Fullerton, California, at 5:40 pm. But, due to delays north of Los Angeles, the train is running a little late - arriving in Fullerton at 6:25. Thanks to a tip from friend Charles Freericks (who saw the train in L.A.), I was able to grab this shot of the train, led by F59PHI 457 in a new Operation Lifesaver wrap. Knowing the 457 was on the point caused me to search out an angle to shoot, whereas I might otherwise have concentrated on a westbound due at about this time because it had the "better" light. In retrospect, I like this light much better! (Thanks, Charles!)

On December 29th, 2013, Amtrak "Pacific Surfliner" #777 (San Diego CA to San Luis Obispo CA) passes the construction site for the new Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center (ARTIC). Located near the present Anaheim station, ARTIC is situated between Angel Stadium (MLB's Angels) and the Honda Center (NHL's Ducks) – and not far from Disneyland – and will serve Amtrak, Metrolink, transit buses, tour buses and, they hope, the planned high speed rail line connecting southern California to northern California. The 67,000-square-foot, three story terminal will cost an estimated $188 million to construct, and is scheduled to open in November 2014. To read more, go to http://www.articinfo.com/.
