Description:  Just two-and-a-half years old, Southern Pacific U33C has been stripped to its bare bones and sits on a whisker track at Southern Pacific's Taylor Yard, in Los Angeles. Built by General Electric in January 1973, this locomotive appeared to be beyond repair on July 16, 1975. But never underestimate the SP's shop forces, as before long this locomotive was back in service and earning its keep. This six-axle U-Boat would be retired on December 17, 1986.

Description:  Like a beached whale being picked apart by scavengers, one of Southern Pacifics three huge U50 diesels is dismantled at a scrapper on Terminal Island, Long Beach, California. "Born" at General Electrics Erie, PA, factory in May of 1964 (as SP 8500, then SP 9550), the big behemoth "died" just 14 years and one month later.

Description:  Southern Pacific Camera Car (aka Simulator Car) 8799 is a former Krauss-Maffei ML-4000 SP 9113 (nee-9010). The engine had its prime mover removed and the front end was rebuilt to house movie cameras used to film various SP mainlines for the roads full-motion locomotive cab simulator, used to train new engineers. This engine is currently being restored to its original appearance, details of which can be found on the locomotives web site: HTTP://sp9010.ncry.org. The car is coupled to a brake sled built on the frame of an old SP FM H24-66.

Description:  Southern Pacific GP9 3353, seen in San Luis Obispo, California, on April 3, 1983, was built in May 1956 as SP subsidiary-Texas & New Orleans 430. When renumbered into the SP system in 1965, it was numbered SP 3552 until rebuilt in May 1972 in Sacramento, at which point the number 3353 was applied.

Description:  Southern Pacific SD45T-2 6809, seen here in the company of SD9s and GP9s in Anaheim, California, on January 30th, 1989, rolled out of EMDs factory in Illinois in February 1972 as SP 9167. It was upgraded at SPs Sacramento Shops in May 1987, at which point it was renumbered. Along with the mechanical upgrading, these units also lost their distinctive SP oscillating lights and received, in anticipation of the merger with the Santa Fe, rooftop beacons (although by the time most of these T-2s were upgraded, the ICC had already denied the SPSF merger).
